Implement CICMHE Case Studies in Class

• Industrial cases used in past material handling design competitions have been repurposed for use in the classroom to support both undergraduate and graduate instruction. These cases are invaluable sources for training students in dealing with real-world problems, exposing them to their multi-faceted nature involving aspects of layout, material handling, storage systems, ergonomics/safety, etc. These cases usually come with large data sets that allow the students to apply data analysis and analytics tools in developing a solution. Some cases' data sets are also available for use in statistics and analytics courses. These data sets come with a problem context and an explanation of the data elements. Based on the presenters' classroom experience, this session will provide guidelines and tips for the use of the cases in undergraduate and graduate classes.

• In this session, we will learn various tools that could be used to create visualizations that can help display warehousing metrics such as picking behavior and heat maps. We will explore using basic visualization tools like Tableau/Power BI and R.

• The shuttle bus will make a quick return trip to the hotel to drop off any computers prior to departing for the Peter Millar Tour.

• A leading men's lifestyle clothing brand based in North Carolina. The Durham DC is the single point of Omni Channel fulfillment for the US supporting e-commerce, specialty retail stores, golf clubs, large retail, and Peter Millar owned stores. This DC has flexed to 300% of initial volume with e-comm. On this tour the group will see their 3 level, zone routed, cart picking tower and talk about the optimizations made thru control systems to support the growth. A key component of the optimization was the introduction of putwall and the ultimate automation of the putwall process thru Tompkins T-Sort.

Transforming Students into Researchers: Strategies for Course-Based Research Development
 

• Dr. Jessye Talley
• To equip educators with effective strategies and interactive activities for fostering a culture of research among students through course-based initiatives, enhancing their critical thinking, problem-solving, and research skills. By the end of the session, participants will (1) Develop a deeper understanding for integrating research into their courses, enabling them to create engaging and productive learning experiences, (2) Leave with an idea to integrate research into their course, (3) Gain knowledge and tools to modify existing course to incorporate a research component, (3) Learn strategies on how to design assessments to measure students' research skills and knowledge and (4) participants will be better equipped to transform their students into researchers, fostering critical thinking, problem-solving, and a deeper understanding of the research process, which can lead to improved student learning outcomes.
   

Teaching Material Handling

• This session will present techniques to utilize a scripting language when teaching IE-related courses. The advantages and disadvantages of the Julia, Python, and Matlab scripting languages will be discussed. Particular emphasis will be on how these languages can interface with mathematical programming solvers and how homework assignments and exams can utilize scripting languages. The expected outcome of this session will be that you will be able to determine if a scripting language can be used in the courses you teach and, if so, which language would be most appropriate.
   

Engineering Your Course Design
 

• Dr. Jen Pazour
• This module will explore course design from an industrial and systems engineering perspective, providing guiding principles and practical examples of how to approach course design from a systems design and learner-centric perspective to increase learner engagement and inclusivity under limited resources. Attendees of this session will come away with (i) a framework for approaching their course design decisions that embraces data-driven metrics, continuous improvement, and acknowledges the instructor’s time as the bottleneck resource in course design; (ii) some practical ways to create a more active, human-centered, inclusive, and personalized class under the constraints of limited time; and (iii) example in-class activities that can be used in facility design, logistics, material handling, and supply chain courses.
