Long-Term Management of Surgical Airways: Trials, Tribulations and Tips - July 25, 2024

Course description: 
This interactive webinar will highlight the importance of an interdisciplinary team to manage surgical airways and outline key factors to develop a reliable team within long-term care and outpatient settings. Attendees will participate in the discussion to share best practice and problem-solving strategies with two speech language pathologists skilled in the management of surgical airways.

Course objectives: 
1. 
Identify the challenges of managing persons with surgical airways in levels of care other than acute medical settings
2. 
Discuss the fundamental considerations for managing individual’s post- tracheostomy or laryngectomy in a long-term care setting
3. 
Outline the critical elements associated with the development of an interdisciplinary surgical airway team across the continuum of care


Speakers: 

Annette Askren, CScD, CCC-SLP
Annette Askren, CScD, CCC-SLP is the Assistant Chief of Speech Pathology at the VA Puget Sound Healthcare System. She serves a comprehensive patient population and is an integral member of the ALS Care Team Center of Excellence. She is published on the topics of ethics and considerations at end-of-life and has been invited to speak nationally. Dr. Askren teaches at the graduate level for West Virginia University’s Speech-Language Pathology program in the School of Medicine. In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Askren is involved on a national level working to optimize speech pathology assessment and intervention approaches for Veterans with ALS.

Kimberly Eichhorn, MS, CCC-SLP, BC-ANCDS, ATP
Kimberly Eichhorn, MS, CCC-SLP, BC-ANCDS, ATP is the Speech Pathology Program Supervisor for the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System. She has served Veterans with communication and swallowing disorders for over 20 years. She is Board Certified by the Academy of Neurologic Communication Disorders and Sciences and also holds certification as an Assistive Technology Professional. She is the chair of the VHA Gender Affirming Program for Speech which provides virtual voice and communication training for Veterans in transition. Her clinical interests and expertise include the care of persons with surgical airways and incorporating technology into rehabilitation of those with neurocognitive communication disorders. She lectures routinely on specialized topics within the field of Speech-Language Pathology for various medical and allied health disciplines as well as local universities. She has served on several national and local interdisciplinary teams in her clinical work for management of surgical airways and stroke rehabilitation to assist in the development of a variety of polices and best practices.
