Interdisciplinary simulation education programs for airway emergencies June 27, 2024

Course description: 
An interdisciplinary oncology team from a major multi-hospital health care system will discuss the development of a simulation training program to address surgical airway emergencies. The team will review case scenarios and lessons learned to support the rational for staff training prior to an airway emergency.  During this 90-minute interactive webinar, participants are encouraged to share strategies for training staff to prepare for an emergency. 

Course objectives: 
1. Review and define strategies to create an interdisciplinary simulation program for population-specific airway bleeding case scenarios.
2. Describe the impact of an in-situ airway bleeding simulation program on staff comfort.
3. Describe lessons learned from creating an airway bleeding simulation program and creation of enduring educational resources to support staff education and training outside of in-situ simulation.


Speakers: 

Melissa Kavanagh, MSN, RN-BC, AGCNS-BC
Melissa Kavanagh, MSN, RN-BC, AGCNS-BC is a Clinical Nurse Specialist at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Melissa received her BSN from LaSalle University in Philadelphia, PA in 2008 and her MSN from LaSalle University in 2016. She holds a national certification as an Adult-Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Melissa has 15 years of nursing experience and is currently the Clinical Nurse Specialist of the ENT nursing unit since 2017. She specializes in the nursing care of ENT surgical patients and partners with both nursing and surgical teams to ensure high quality care to post-operative ENT patients. In addition, Melissa co-leads the hospital-wide interdisciplinary collaborative focusing on tracheostomy care. Melissa manages nursing policies, use of tracheostomy products, tracheostomy nursing practice and serves as a nursing consultant.

Caitlin Pickeral, MPAM, PA-C
Caitlin Pickeral, MPAM, PA-C is the inpatient Physician Assistant at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in the department of Otorhinolaryngology: Head and Neck Surgery. She serves as part of their interdisciplinary team of providers caring for persons with surgical airways and has used simulation as a training tool to increase staff comfort with airway bleed emergencies. Prior to taking this role, Caitlin was a physician assistant in Northern Virginia where she did outpatient and inpatient ENT in addition to moonlighting as a nocturnal hospitalist at Inova Mount Vernon during COVID. She completed her Masters in Physician Assistant Medicine at the University of Lynchburg and her Bachelor’s in Biology at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Jacquelyn Sexton, MSN CRNP FNP-BC VA-BC
Jacquelyn Sexton, MSN CRNP FNP-BC VA-BC is a Family Nurse Practitioner from Philadelphia, PA specializing in the care of Otolaryngology patients at Penn Medicine. Prior to taking this role, she was a Nurse Manager at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania managing surgical units caring for Head & Neck, Plastics, Urology, and Colorectal Patients. Jackie had taken this leadership role after being a Clinical Nurse since 2012 where her interest initiated caring for the Otolaryngology patient population.  She completed her undergraduate studies in Health & Exercise Science with a Minor in Psychology at Syracuse University, her Bachelor’s in Nursing at Drexel University, and her Master’s in Nursing as a Family Nurse Practitioner at La Salle University.
