Flexible Laryngoscopy for Management of a Tracheoesophageal Voice Prosthesis - May 23, 2024
Course description:
Following a total laryngectomy, a tracheoesophageal voice prosthesis may be inserted into a puncture between the trachea and esophagus for alaryngeal speech. Direct visualization of the prosthesis in the esophagus is possible utilizing a flexible laryngoscope. Three cases will be reviewed highlighting the use of flexible laryngoscopy to assess the TE voice prosthesis and develop a plan of care.
Course objectives:
1. Describe the use of a flexible laryngoscope to directly visualize a tracheoesophageal voice prosthesis within the esophagus
2. Summarize the use of direct visualization to assist in tracheoesophageal puncture sizing
3. Utilize endoscopic images to provide patient education and biofeedback
Additional information:
This course is for clinicians with a basic knowledge of the anatomy following a total laryngectomy, tracheoesophageal voice prosthesis for alaryngeal voice, and flexible laryngoscopy or fiberoptic endoscopic exam of swallow function. The panel will discuss management options for each case and the audience will be invited to submit comments and questions.
