OVERVIEW

People over 65 years of age have the highest incidence of epilepsy. The management of seizures in older adults is complicated by the presence of physiological changes related to aging, comorbidities, and concerns regarding adverse events and drug-drug interactions. This program will review challenges associated with managing epilepsy in older adults, specifically those residing in a long-term care (LTC) setting. Recommendations for monitoring the efficacy and safety of antiseizure medications (ASMs) and the importance of treating to target will be covered. After participating in this webinar, learners will be better be able to identify older adults with epilepsy in LTC who are not responding adequately to ASM treatment and may benefit from changes in their treatment regimen.

This activity is intended for neurologists/epileptologists, primary care physicians, pediatricians, nurse practitioners, nurses/advanced practice nurses, physician assistants, and other healthcare professionals (HCPs) involved in the care of patients with epilepsy (such as, HCPs in long-term care).

GOAL STATEMENT

The goal of this activity is for learners to be better able to identify patients with epilepsy in long-term care who are not responding adequately to antiseizure medication therapy and may benefit from changes in their treatment regimen.
