  • Preparation Day (virtual): Tuesday, June 18, 2024, from 9 am - 11 am (Pacific Time)

  • Summer Institute (in-person): Tuesday, June 25 – Thursday, June 27, 2024, from 8 am - 5 pm (Pacific Time)

  • Location: SDSC Auditorium, UC San Diego campus

Overview

The San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) Cyberinfrastructure-Enabled Machine Learning (CIML) project is focused on teaching researchers and students the best practices for effectively running machine learning (ML) and data science applications on advanced cyberinfrastructure (CI) and high-performance computing (HPC) systems.

The CIML Summer Institute introduces machine learning (ML) concepts to researchers, developers and educators to the techniques and methods needed to migrate their ML applications from smaller, locally run resources, such as laptops and workstations, to large-scale HPC systems, such as the SDSC’s Expanse supercomputer. Participants will have the opportunity to accelerate their learning process through highly interactive classes with hands-on tutorials using SDSC’s Expanse.

Additionally, attendees will have opportunities to meet one-on-one with SDSC’s experts to discuss in detail the best techniques to solve their specific ML problems.

Researchers and educators from underrepresented groups and minority serving institutions (MSIs) are strongly encouraged to apply.

Application submissions do not require a fee. A registration will be charged only after the application has been accepted. If the registration fee would preclude you from attending, please contact us directly. Registration includes meals (light breakfast each day, lunch, and one evening reception).

  • Academic, Student, Government and Non-Profit Organizations: $250
  • Industry: $500

Prerequisite

  • Knowledge or experience with machine learning is required

  • Familiarity with UNIX/Linux shell

  • Basic programming skills (especially Python) are strongly recommended

Program includes:

  • Overview of High-Performance Computing (HPC) and Parallel Computing Concepts

  • Instructional and hands-on exercises focused on HPC techniques, Machine Learning, Scalable Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and Large Language Model (LLM) inference

  • Team works on prepared training problems

Testimonials:

This is an excellent program. It covers a wide range of topics, from the basics of parallel computing to more advanced such as transfer learning. Instructors provide clear and engaging instructions. It is highly recommended.

Yes. The machine learning part is very good, high level of abstract and broad summary, better than many online learning material.
