Abstracts for presentation are invited for the Workshop on Surface and Dermal Sampling Methods for Exposure Assessment and Monitoring to be held Wednesday, October 8, 2025. This workshop is sponsored by ASTM Committee D22 on Air Quality and will be held at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis in Atlanta, GA, in conjunction with the October standards development meetings of the committee.

Objective and Scope

The development of standards on surface and dermal sampling methods for exposure assessment and monitoring is urgently needed as existing and new legislation, such as TSCA in North America and REACH in Europe, introduce limits for various chemicals related to skin and surface exposure.

Apart from metals and pesticides, there are few unambiguous methods available, and development of consensus standards may help to overcome this shortcoming. We aim with this workshop to get a better picture of what methods are available, what ongoing research projects are currently running and what is needed for helping practitioners to ensure that exposure limits can be met.

The workshop can also help refine exposure assessments that use data from surface and dermal measurements.

Topics for this workshop include:

Drivers for surface and dermal sampling (e.g., current and proposed legislation or regulations);
Dermal and surface exposure limit values;
Available methods for sampling and analysis;
Research on improving methods and developing new methodologies for surface and dermal sampling and analysis;
Needs for new or improved consensus standards;
Protocols for dermal exposure testing that will be used to inform and refine estimates of exposures.

Abstract Submission

Those interested in presenting at this workshop should submit a 250 to 300-word abstract pertaining to the above topics to Workshop Chairs Steven Verpaele, Michael Brisson, and Xiaoyu Liu no later than June 15, 2025.

Publication Information

Symposium authors are required to submit their papers for ASTM publication in Selected Technical Papers (STP), an online and printed, peer-reviewed publication for the international scientific and engineering community. STP papers should be full-length technical papers of approximately 10,000 words, significantly contribute to the technical literature, and must include a review of past work in the relevant area and present information of current interest or probe new fields. After the final selection of abstracts has been approved, the ASTM Editorial Office will send authors’ instructions via email, but also can be found by clicking here.

Manuscripts to be peer reviewed for the STP are due online no later than DATE at the ASTM Editorial Office. The corresponding author (the author who is the main contact with ASTM Headquarters) will receive a copy of his/her paper in portable document format (PDF). All published authors will have the opportunity to purchase reprints of their papers at a nominal cost. Only those papers submitted by the manuscript due date will be included in the STP. Please note that all submitted papers are subject to peer review by two independent reviewers.

The STP will be submitted to the Library of Congress with an ISBN number and will be reviewed for inclusion in the Web of Science Conference Proceedings Citation Index (CPCI) and Google Scholar.

Workshop attendees interested in receiving 3.5 hours of Continuing Education credits must complete the CEU application form in the back of the program booklet and email it to ASTM Symposia Operations at symposia@astm.org. You must be registered and have attended the entire event in order to receive the credit. A certificate will be sent to you via email approximately 1 to 2 weeks after the workshop concludes.
