Heart Health, Stress and Cancer

Cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of death among cancer survivors.  Learn more about the evidence-based relationship between physical and psychosocial stress on the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD).  Dr. Pursnani will discuss the relationship between stress and CVD, in addition to the evidence available for use of stress reduction techniques in potentially reducing CVD.  Practical suggestions for stress reduction will be provided.

Dr. Seema Pursnani is a cardiologist with specialized training in cardiac imaging, lifestyle medicine and lipid management.  She serves as Director of the Women’s Heart Health program at Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara.  She is actively involved in clinical research related to health disparities and thrives on teaching the next generation of physicians, serving as Assistant Program Director of the Internal Medicine Residency program.

Individual behavior is well documented to have a substantial impact on the prevention, treatment, and course of a wide variety of illnesses and conditions. Lisa Morgan and Dr. Ann Kodani will explore how to unlock behavior change and achieve Lifestyle Medicine habits that can transform lives.

Dr. Ann Kodani is board certified in Internal Medicine and Lifestyle Medicine and is a facilitator for an intensive lifestyle medicine program, as well as a co-lead for the communication consultants, a group which helps improve physician communication with their patients.

Fog Be Gone - Practical Approaches to Preventing and Treating Cancer-Related Memory Loss

Dr. Punam Patel will review evidence-based practical approaches to preventing and treating cancer and chemotherapy-induced memory loss and will link memory tools that she applies to prevent and manage dementia in older adults. This talk can benefit anyone interested in maintaining a healthy brain.

Dr. Punam Patel is triple board certified in Family Medicine, Geriatric Medicine and Lifestyle Medicine and practices in the Geriatric Medicine and Continuing Care Services Department. Dr. Patel’s leadership and clinical work, in areas that provide consultative services to frail older adults and home confined patients, brings her face-to-face with the reality of the devastating loss of brain function and the ever-increasing number of patients that are afflicted with neurocognitive disorders.

The Mighty Mitochondria - Building a Foundation
for Health and Longevity
 
Insulin resistance and excess oxidative stress are some of the main mechanisms that impact the health of our mitochondria. Poorly functioning mitochondria contribute to accelerated aging and increased risk of developing cardiometabolic syndrome, neurodegenerative disorders and cancer.

During this talk, Anzonette Pittet will identify the factors that contribute to insulin resistance and metabolic dysfunction and discuss strategies how we can make daily choices to support our metabolic health through nutrition and lifestyle.

Anzonette Pittet has been closely involved in Cancer Survivors Day Planning Committee, participated as a presenter and booth lead. She has been invited as a speaker to the Silicon Valley Oncology Nursing Society’s Hot Topics conferences, Cancer CAREPoint patient education presentations, Physician CME presentations and the Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Summit.

Anzonette is passionate about the role nutrition plays during the course of cancer treatment, but more importantly, how optimized nutrition can support exceptional health and longevity.

Tasha Stoiber, Ph.D.

Dr. Tasha Stoiber is a Senior Scientist for the Environmental Working Group and works to better understand the connections between exposure to chemicals and public health. As a member of EWG’s science investigation’s team, she researches contaminants in drinking water, indoor air pollution and chemicals in consumer products. She holds a Ph.D. in environmental chemistry & technology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She has been part of EWG's team for nine years.
