Scientific exploration and discovery are enabled by increasingly specialized information technology infrastructure. The requirements of a wide array of scientific research domains provide challenges that regularly exceed the capabilities of existing infrastructure, necessitating a continuous rejuvenation of services, architecture, and technologies. This process must not simply provide incremental improvement but truly transform current capabilities. The Fifth National Research Platform (5NRP) workshop will focus on examining opportunities for designing and implementing future-oriented cyber-capabilities for our science research communities, and how to engage researchers and educators.
Leading up to this initiative has been the Pacific Research Platform (PRP), driven by the high-speed networking needs of collaborative, big-data science. Funded in 2015 by a >$7M grant from the National Science Foundation (Larry Smarr, PI), the PRP created a researcher-defined and data-focused network whose requirements are driven by direct engagements with sophisticated, cyberinfrastructure-knowledgeable science teams chosen from several data-intensive fields, including particle physics, astronomy, biomedical sciences, earth sciences, and scalable data visualization. The PRP started out as a partnership of more than 25 institutions, including four National Science Foundation, Department of Energy, and NASA supercomputer centers, and has since grown to be a nationwide collaboration with many NSF, DoD, and non-federal support. The PRP was and is complemented by another ~$7M in allied NSF awards and the SDSC has been awarded another $12M (Frank Wuerthwein, PI) to carry on and expand NRP over the next 10 years.
The Workshop will focus on long-term NRP viability and access. Several tutorials will be offered that will help attendees learn how to access NRP and allied resources—please visit the agenda page for the 5NRP Program as it develops.
The 5NRP Workshop will bring together more than 100 representatives from existing PRP partners, the new NRP awardees, and many other institutions, who support domain scientists, network and system administrators, campus CIOs, regional network leaders (The Quilt), and representatives of ESnet, Internet2, ACCESS, the Open Science Grid (OSG), the Open Storage Network (OSN), the OpenAirInterface, NSF IRNC awardees, NSF’s Office Director of the Office of Advanced Cyberinfrastructure (OAC), leaders of the Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) section of the NSF Office of Integrative Activities (OIA), and the Global Research Platform and its *RPs. They will discuss expanding/replicating the NRP addressing the potential challenges, funding opportunities, and private sector interest in scaling the Science DMZ model to a national level with the National Research Platform as a fully working, welcoming, and expandable model.
The 5NRP workshop will be held March 20-22, at UC San Diego. FABRIC’s KNIT 8 Workshop will be begin the day before at SDSC and have some overlapping sessions and tutorials with 5NRP (there’s a separate registration for KNIT 8).
