OVERVIEW

Congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is a serious public health burden. Worldwide, the prevalence of CMV infections among women of reproductive age ranges between 45% and 99%. In the United States, CMV is the most common congenital viral infection, with approximately 1 in 200 babies born every year with this virus. Although most babies are asymptomatic, up to 20% will develop symptoms such as permanent hearing loss and/or neurodevelopment delays. Primary infection, reactivation, and reinfection during pregnancy can all lead to in utero transmission to the fetus, with different severity risk stratifications depending on timing of infection and CMV serostatus of the pregnant patient. This symposium will serve as a platform to discuss burden, prevalence, and etiology of CMV. It will also address the importance of CMV serostatus before and during pregnancy and its potential impact on the fetus, as well as discuss current and emerging management strategies.
