Leadership involves a process of social influence. This lifelong learning session will explore various concepts and strategies for harnessing power and social influence in personal and professional contexts. Specifically, this seminar will introduce various bases of power and allow executives to reflect on how they and others draw upon these bases of power to achieve influence. This seminar will also explore tactics executives may use to influence the attitudes and behaviors of others and to help achieve an objective. These influence tactics allow leaders at all levels to elevate one’s voice, amplify the voices of others, and guide others in pursuing a shared direction. As this seminar will explore, influence is not limited to the most vocal individual in a group. Rather, these tactics can also be demonstrated by those who are most humble. As Nelson Mandela, former president of South Africa, noted, “A leader … is like a shepherd. He stays behind the flock, letting the most nimble go out ahead, whereupon the others follow, not realizing that all along they are being directed from behind.”
