In what we hope will become an annual event, the New Zealand Bar Association | Ngā Ahorangi Motuhake o Te Ture is holding its first Art Display for lawyers to showcase their work to colleagues and guests. We are grateful to MAS who are sponsoring this display.
The aim is to show how creativity can contribute to a healthy work-life balance. Recent research suggests that “participating in creative arts can result in significant benefits to psychosocial health, including improved self-esteem, confidence, self-efficacy, improved social connections, and overall quality of life.”[1]
Whether you are a paint-by-numbers aficionado, like to colour inside or outside the lines, or a serious abstract, impressionist or surrealist (or all three), we would like to hear from lawyers who are willing to share their creativity. If you are a photographer, a textile artist, or just a crafter, there is a place for you.
We are starting small and limiting the size of the display to just a few works. Unfortunately, we have to limit the size of the works and cannot accommodate sculptures. At this stage, we can only cater for paintings, photography, and textile arts that can be displayed in our limited space.

About the Paintings

Clive Elliott KC describes himself as a serial dabbler in the arts with an interest in painting and writing. He is also a social commentator and TEDx speaker, with an interest in writing, poetry, and public speaking. In his “day job”, Clive is a King’s counsel, patent attorney and arbitrator. Clive is a past president of the New Zealand Bar Association | Ngā Ahorangi Motuhake o te Ture.
The subjects in these paintings are two young girls, Amelie and Zara, who are the daughters of Clive's close friends. The paintings are based on photos taken by their mother at Muriwai Beach in 2022. They have since been gifted to Amelie and Zara.
