INTERLAKEN, SWITZERLAND

The little town of Interlaken, Switzerland, 40 mi/65 km southeast of Bern, is the main tourism hub for the Bernese Oberland region. It makes an excellent base for day trips to nearby towns, lakes, and mountains. As the name implies, Interlaken lies between two lakes, Brienzer See and Thuner See. Blessed with a fairly stable and mild climate, it's simply beautiful. The view of the Jungfrau (13,642 ft/4,158 m) from there is simply breathtaking. Interlaken attracts large numbers of tourists in the summer with concerts, equestrian events, tennis, hiking excursions, and watersports.

The surrounding countryside of the Bernese Oberland is filled with stereotypical images of Switzerland: mountain chalets, ski lodges, hilly pastures, mountain peaks, glaciers, waterfalls, Alphorn blowers, yodelers, and horse-drawn sleighs. A scenic way to get into the mountains of the nearby Jungfrau region is by train to Grindelwald, Kleine Scheidegg, or to the top of Jungfraujoch (Europe's highest train station).

Good day trips include a visit to the village of Brienz to see Ballenberg, its outdoor living museum of old houses, where traditional crafts are demonstrated (summer only); a ride on the cable car from Stechelberg up to Murren; or a simple drive through the charming villages in the area.

Don't miss a hike through the nearby Lauterbrunnen Valley, starting from the quaint town of Lauterbrunnen, about 20 minutes south of Interlaken. The valley features 72 thundering waterfalls including the Staubbach Falls and the Trummelbach Falls hidden almost entirely in the mountain. April-November you can hike from the Lauterbrunnen train station to Stechelberg to take in the falls and return to the starting point by Post bus.

VICTORIA-JUNGFRAU GRAND HOTEL & SPA

Surrounded by the Alps and with the legendary view of the Jungfrau Mountain, the Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa welcomes you in the heart of the Bernese Oberland. The massive 1864 building is a paragon of beaux-arts architecture, full of steepled towers, extravagant decorative details, wrought-iron balconies, and pretty white-and-yellow striped awnings. This is a place where tradition and modernity join hands! The Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa looks back on 150-years of history – and still it moves with the times. The noble ambience is contrasted by a modern interior.

In the lively restaurants you will enjoy authentic dishes with regional ingredients, international classics, or Italian delicacies that melt on your tongue. Escape the mundane in Spa Nescens, one of the most breathtaking Spas in Switzerland. No matter what the occasion, whether it is a family holiday, a wellness weekend, a wedding celebration, or a business event: the Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa looks forward to welcoming you in the midst of Interlaken’s unique panorama. The perfect starting point to discover the beauties of the Bernese Oberland.

GROUP EXCURSION

MAGICAL MOUNT SCHILTHORN - JUNE 25

Allegis/TownSquare will host you on this exciting excursion to experience some of the world’s most famous and dramatic scenery. A short motor coach ride takes you to Lauterbrunnen and on to Stechelberg, passing impressive waterfalls, quaint villages, flowers, meadows and pine trees.  At Stechelberg you board Europe’s longest aerial cable car to the top of Mt. Schilthorn. The difference in height from the ground station to the very top is 7,000 ft which takes you exactly 1,010 seconds of traveling time. Awe-inspiring views stretch from the Black Forest in Germany to the mighty Mont-Blanc massif in France and, of course, the magnificent Mt. Jungfraujoch group with its eternal ice and snow. Lunch can be obtained at the Piz Gloria revolving restaurant 10,000 ft in the sky – made famous by the 007 James Bond film, On her Majesty’s Secret Service, as one of the filming locations.

On the way back to the base of the mountain, we will take time to visit the small town of Murren - a charming village with magnificent views and no traffic noise. It is perched on a shelf of Alpine pasture forming a balcony overlooking the steep cleft of the Lauterbrunnen Valley. Destinations like Murren are hard to find – alpine scenery, mountain culture, and exciting activities! It is a great place for hiking enthusiasts who wish to enjoy the natural beauty of Switzerland.
