OVERVIEW

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) continues to be most common viral infection in adults. In the United States, it is the leading cause of nongenetic congenital deafness, accounting for approximately one-third of all cases. Approximately 1 out of every 200 infants are born with congenital CMV every year, of whom 10% will have CMV symptoms including hearing loss, microcephaly, seizures, and behavioral and sensory issues, to name a few.

This program will discuss the importance of educating patients who are thinking of becoming pregnant and/or are pregnant about strategies to reduce the risk of acquiring CMV during pregnancy. The faculty will discuss the significance of knowing the patient's serostatus and what has been learned from states that have implemented universal newborn screening.  Finally, it will discuss a patient's journey with congenital CMV, importance of universal newborn screening, and what has been learned from states that have implemented this screening type.
