Opioid Analgesic Therapy for Chronic Pain: Defining Current Therapeutic Use
Friday, 24 March 2023, 6:30am – 8:00am CDT
Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Room 303BC, San Antonio

Chronic pain affects an estimated 50 million Americans. Pain may be managed with a variety of nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic treatments. While pain management with opioid analgesic therapies is recognized to offer therapeutic benefits for many patients, when not used appropriately, these medications can also lead to abuse and overdose. Uncertainty regarding appropriate opioid prescribing practices can result in overprescribing or under prescribing of these pain medications. This symposium will review when opioids should be considered for patients with chronic pain, including a short panel discussion of patient cases, along with approaches for maintaining patient safety with the use of opioid analgesics.
