Introductions: Why Strategic Planning?
Teams meet the other groups to share current challenges and discuss the value of strategic planning.
9:30 – 9:45 a.m.
Planning: Theory and Practice
Workshop leaders introduce current best practices for strategic planning in higher education.
9:45 – 10:30 a.m.
Overview of the Strategic Planning Process
Workshop leaders present the key steps required for developing and implementing an effective strategic plan, as well as the series of activities and exercises teams will complete throughout the day.
10:30 – 10:45 a.m.
Introduction to the Project Charter
Workshop leaders provide instructions for developing the Strategic Planning Project Charter—the action plan each team will leave with for strategic planning on their campus.
10:45 a.m. – Noon
Team Time: Setting the Stage for Planning
Each team discusses the contextual and historical factors that have created the need for a new or revised strategic plan at their institution.
Noon – 1:00 p.m.
Lunch
1:00 – 1:45 p.m.
Engaging Stakeholders
Teams consider what stakeholders they have at their institution, what their interest may be in supporting the strategic planning process, and how they can gather information from them.
1:45 – 2:30 p.m.
Situational Analysis
Workshop leaders begin by revisiting a familiar tool – the SWOT analysis – and highlighting its value in the strategic planning process.
2:30 – 3:15 p.m.
Goal Setting
Emphasis is given to the definition and communication of goals in the strategic planning process. Teams conclude this activity by setting and mapping goals.
3:15 – 4:00 p.m.
Charter Development
Teams have time to work on their project charter. The day will conclude with teams sharing some of their findings from the day’s activities and with the event leaders answering questions.
9:00 – 10:15 a.m.
Aligning Operational Planning with Strategy
Teams consider how existing operational plans such as budget development, technology master plans, facilities master plans, curriculum development, and assessment programs fit into the strategic plan.
10:15 – 11:15 a.m.
Action Steps and Communication Plan
Teams will develop a plan to communicate and implement the project charter.
11:15 – 11:45 a.m.
