Modern Tree-Safety Evaluation: from VTA and SIA to Allometric Self-Referencing (ASR)

Presenter: Frank Rinn

Mature urban trees should be preserved as long as possible because of the many benefits they bring – even when they have defects. But: VTA is principally inappropriate for evaluating the breakage safety of defective mature urban trees and SIA uses the wrong math, resulting in fundamentally wrong results. In addition, both methods unnecessarily increase costs for inspection and the care of mature trees and at the same time reduce the remaining life time of these import habitats for urban biodiversity and climate. Fortunately, bio-mechanical science shows that ASR allows to assess and evaluate the breakage safety of mature defective urban trees quicker and much more reliable as compared to the established methods, such as VTA and SIA. You just to learn some basics that will be explained in this workshop:

  • wood-anatomy

  • wind-loads (and crown – cabling)

  • adaptive growth

  • balancing load carrying capacity and wind-loads

  • tree-safety evaluation without technical devices
