Characteristics of Neurocysticercosis and Associated Comorbidities Across the UC Health System

Describe clinical and demographic characteristics of patients with NCC and cysticercosis and evaluate associations between NCC and cysticercosis with other neurologic comorbidities.
NCC and cysticercosis were strongly associated with epilepsy and a broad range of neurologic comorbidities across nearly all conditions examined.

Comparing Patient-Reported Outcomes With Clinician-Documented Symptoms Using Natural Language Processing in Cancer Care

Objective: to compare symptom identification from PRO data with symptoms extracted from clinical notes using a rule-based natural language processing (NLP) approach.
Symptoms were more frequently reported in PROs compared with NLP-extracted CD for anxiety, depression, physical impairment, and cognitive impairment, suggesting potential under-reporting of these symptom domains in clinician-directed communication.

Context-Dependent Effects of Hypothermia in Two High Acuity Cohorts: Open Heart Aortic Arch Repair and Severe Trauma

To independently inspect two cohorts (surgical and trauma) that are in the state of Level 1 acuity in the clinical environment, both in state of hypothermia.
In this retrospective analysis, hypothermia demonstrated context dependent associations with outcomes, where controlled intraoperative hypothermia was associated with reduced neurological injury without an observed increase in mortality, while trauma associated hypothermia trended toward worse outcomes.

EHR-Based Phenotyping of Major Depressive Disorder to Advance Personalized Medicine via the 4 Million-Patient UC Health Data Warehouse Cohort

Using EHR data available in the UC Health Data Warehouse (UCHDW), this project aims to develop a robust, validated algorithm that advances the phenotyping of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) patients by classifying ordered groups with improved gradation of confidence and severity of MDD.
This study provides a scalable, modern ICD-10-based framework for classifying depression burden across large EHR populations, with phenotype groupings reflecting known demographic trends in depression and a greater burden of depression-associated features in the higher-severity groups.

Impact of Elevated Lipoprotein(a) and Cumulative Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL) Burden on the Progression of Cardiac Allograft Vasculopathy: A Serial IVUS Analysis

To investigate these metabolic drivers and determine whether the total cumulative burden of LDL cholesterol ("cholesterol-years") and elevated Lp(a) act independently or synergistically to accelerate the rate of atherosclerotic plaque progression in the cardiac allograft, measured by changes in Maximal Intimal Thickness (MIT).
Cumulative LDL exposure, rather than baseline Lp(a) elevation, is the dominant metabolic driver of accelerated CAV in heart transplant recipients.

Neuropsychiatric Symptoms Associated with Increased Housing Instability Among Adult Cancer Survivors: An All of Us Study

In this cross-sectional study, we evaluated for neuropsychiatric symptoms that may predict housing instability among US-based cancer survivors using the National Institutes of Health (NIH) All of Us (AoU) Research Program, a large-scale national health database.
Approximately 1 in 10 cancer survivors reported experiencing housing instability, and a variety of cognitive deficits and other neuropsychiatric symptoms remained significantly associated with housing instability.

This study evaluated the prevalence of SL in outpatient notes documented in EHR using natural language processing (NLP).
SL appeared in 30% of clinical notes and in 36.7% of patients.

Treatment Patterns and Outcomes Among Patients Treated With Next-Generation Covalent Bruton Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors (cBTKi) in Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) at the University of California San Francisco Health (UCSF) System

This real-world retrospective observational study included adult patients with CLL/SLL receiving ZANU or ACA between January 1, 2020 and June 1, 2025 at the UCSF Health system.
Patients treated with ZANU had a lower risk of starting next treatment and a trend of improved survival versus ACA.

Understanding Characteristics of Acupuncture Care within the University of California Health Systems

To examine patterns of acupuncture care from the UC Health Data Warehouse (UCHDW) containing deidentified EHR data from five health systems and their affiliated medical centers and clinics.
A total of 35,627 unique patients received acupuncture across the UC-affiliated health systems, representing 277,697 acupuncture encounters over 10 years.

Validation of New EHR-Based Multimorbidity-Weighted Index Across Six University of California Health Systems

Evaluate performance of eMWI for predicting future mortality and healthcare utilization and compare its performance against commonly used comorbidity measures.
Each standardized unit increase in eMWI was associated with additional hospitalization (0.13 visits) and ED visits (0.12 visits) and higher risk of mortality (25%) in 2 years.

Validating the Association Between Gut Microbial Profile and Tinnitus: a Metagenomic Analysis

Do tinnitus patients demonstrate a different GM profile when compared to their controls (i.e. distinct taxa and dysbiosis)?
No significant gut dysbiosis could be observed for tinnitus patients, but tinnitus-elevated taxa exert behavior consistent with mechanistic suggestions between the GM and tinnitus.
