Workshop on the Analytical Methods for Hemp Products as Animal Feed: How to Overcome Gaps in Matrices, Detectors and Quantifiable Limits for Regulators and Laboratories
Date: April 24, 2023 - April 25, 2023
Event Location: Virtual Only
Organized by: ASTM Committee D37 on Cannabis
About the Event
The Workshop on the Analytical Methods for Hemp Products as Animal Feed: How to Overcome Gaps in Matrices, Detectors and Quantifiable Limits for Regulators and Laboratories will be held April 24, 2023 - April 25, 2023. The workshop is sponsored by ASTM Committees D37.03 on Laboratory and D37.07 on Industrial Hemp, and will be held virtually. The language of the workshop will be English.
Objective and Scope
The purpose of the workshop is to bring analytical chemists and regulators together to understand what analytes and levels of quantification are currently achievable for multiple matrices. Hemp as an animal feed is highly desirable by hemp producers and the pet and livestock industries. However, there are a limited number of methods approved to quantify trace amounts of cannabinoids in grain products. New methods and standards are needed as well as methods developed that can analyze the trace amounts of cannabinoids that may be transferred into animal tissues and animal by-products intended for human consumption, like meat, milk, and eggs.
Topics include, but are not limited to:
- Current available methods and limits of quantification for cannabinoids in hempseed by-products
- Regulatory oversight and assessment of adulteration or compliance in hemp materials with trace amounts of cannabinoids (non-concentrates) - Why do we need these approvals?
- Current research in cannabinoid transference in production animals
- Non-ruminants
- Ruminants
- Current research in cannabinoid transference into animal by-products for human consumption (Including established wash-out periods and inclusion rates for production animals)
- Meat
- Milk
- Eggs
- Current research in cannabinoid transference and safety concerns in pets and companion animals
- What methods are yet to be developed and when is approval likely?
Workshop Survey
Subcommittee D37.03 on Laboratory created a survey to gather information on how laboratories test for cannabinoid concentration in hemp seed and products derived from hemp seed. The results of the survey will be discussed at the beginning of the workshop, and help the committee determine the need for related test methods and interlaboratory studies in this area. The link to the survey is below:

Publication Information
Based on the technical quality of the abstracts, presenters may be contacted to submit a full paper for a planned special section of ASTM’s Journal of Testing and Evaluation (JoTE). You will be notified by March 31, 2023, if the Editors would like you to submit a full paper for the special section. Please note that all submitted papers are subject to peer review by two independent reviewers.
Manuscripts to be peer reviewed for the special section are due online at the ASTM Editorial Office no later than August 31, 2023. The corresponding author will receive a copy of their paper in an electronic format. All published authors will have the opportunity to purchase reprints of their papers at a nominal cost.
