2023 CIML Summer Institute
We are excited to announce that the CIML Summer Institute will be held in-person at the University of California, San Diego.
Preparation Day (virtual): Tuesday, June 20, 2023 from 9am - 11am PT
Summer Institute (in-person): Tuesday, June 27 – Thursday, June 29, 2023
Location: 15th Floor at the Village Room A & B, UC San Diego Campus
The San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) Cyberinfrastructure-Enabled Machine Learning (CIML) project is focused on teaching researchers and students the best practices for effectively running machine learning (ML) and data science applications on advanced cyberinfrastructure (CI) and high-performance computing (HPC) systems.
The CIML Summer Institute introduces machine learning (ML) concepts to researchers, developers and educators to the techniques and methods needed to migrate their ML applications from smaller, locally run resources, such as laptops and workstations, to large-scale HPC systems, such as the SDSC’s Expanse supercomputer. Participants will have the opportunity to accelerate their learning process through highly interactive classes with hands-on tutorials using SDSC’s Expanse.
Additionally, attendees will have opportunities to meet one-on-one with SDSC’s experts to discuss in detail the best techniques to solve their specific ML problems.
Researchers and educators from underrepresented groups and minority serving institutions (MSIs) are strongly encouraged to apply.
Application submissions do not require a fee. A registration will be charged only after the application has been accepted. If the registration fee would preclude you from attending, please contact us directly. Registration includes meals (light breakfast each day, lunch, and one evening reception).
Knowledge or experience with machine learning is required
Familiarity with UNIX/Linux shell
Basic programming skills (especially Python) are strongly recommended
Overview of High-Performance Computing (HPC) and Parallel Computing Concepts
Instructional and hands-on exercises focused on HPC techniques, Machine Learning, Scalable Machine Learning and Deep Learning
Team works on prepared training problems
I would highly recommend the CIML program! It was a fantastic opportunity to learn about some of the latest and greatest machine learning tools available. The instructors were all highly knowledgeable, very helpful, and also incredibly generous in sharing a variety of codes for carrying out a variety of machine learning projects.
- Gianmarc, 2022 CIML attendee
Yes, I would definitely recommend it to anyone getting started with Machine learning on HPC. The alias setup for running all hands-on sessions ensured fewer typos and errors/bugs. All sessions were designed to be effective for both beginners and advanced users. Overall CIML training is a must for anyone trying to understand ML and HPC.

Participation in the SDSC CIML Summer Institute will be limited to 45-50 candidates. Applicants will be screened to make sure that they have the necessary background to benefit from the CIML Institute, but the main selection criterion is that the applicants have a compelling need for the skills being taught at the CIML Institute in their research or teaching.
