NEC Corporation is a Japanese multinational information technology and electronics corporation. This session will introduce NEC's organizational transformation efforts using PMI’s Disciplined Agile® (DA).

Is your organization agile? Not just your team, but the entire organization?

According to international surveys such as the “State of Agile Report,” many teams say a lack of organizational understanding is an impediment to organizational agility acquisition. Indeed, the following problems can lead to the abandonment of extensions to the organization, or worse, the team reverts to its traditional style. Risks include:

  • Teams are transforming to be value-driven and agile in their projects, but the organization demands the application of traditional plan-driven systems and rules.
  • The organization lacks understanding and maintenance of the necessary support for the team. The team must do all the preparation and problem solving for the project on their own.

However, in organizations that practice agile in a variety of domains, where team autonomy and delegation are important, and where teams face a wide variety of situations and challenges, attempting to manage teams with traditional centralized governance will result in a loss of team autonomy and agility.

NEC believes that in order to solve these issues, it is essential to have management that harmonizes team autonomy and organizational discipline, rather than management based on conventional uniform value standards. In order to maximize team agility and achieve agility throughout the organization, it is important for the organization to engage the team with appropriate discipline and support, and to consider and practice a balance between the team and the organization, rather than considering them separately.

NEC believes that DA will be useful in advancing these efforts and entered into the first partnership in APAC in 2022 to undertake organizational transformation on its own.

At the conclusion of this session, attendees will be able to:

  • Discuss the importance of the characteristics and practices to make an organization agile-ready; and
  • Explain how DA can be adapted for organizational change.

Session 205: Gender, Collaboration, and the Future of Work

PMI Talent Triangle

Subtopics: Conflict Management, Diversity Equity and Inclusion, Emotional Intelligence, Negotiation and Persuasion,

Audience Level: Core

Duration: 45 minutes

Speaker(s) Region(s): North America

Astutely said by McKinsey & Company in the opener for their article series on the Future of Work, “The world of work is changing.” As we shift to a more people-focused world, skill strengths like empathy, interpersonal communication, and strategic thinking will continue to take center stage. Changemakers at all levels of an organization have the power to make an impact on current and future ways of working.

As we look to the future, we focus on the direction and sustainability of organizations, reimagining our workplaces, and building a workforce to achieve these goals. Workplaces and the workforce of the past had defined roles and stereotypes in which many were gender-based. As we look to the future, this conversation will explore how we can equip ourselves as individuals, teams, and organizations to redefine our places of work in a world that promotes individuality and inclusion.

At the conclusion of this session, attendees will be able to:

  • Think together about the connection between gender, collaboration, and the future of work while becoming aware of what it means to bring more of "the feminine" into how we negotiate and resolve conflict;
  • Embrace a broader definition of what negotiation is and its connection to collaboration and organizational culture; and
  • Understand what this has to do with inclusion in general.
