The COVID-19 pandemic and longstanding economic, racial, and gender-based issues in the country have exacerbated negative mental health outcomes for our students and educational practitioners. Researchers and practitioners have looked towards different frameworks to address these issues in schools. Social and emotional learning, is the process through which all people apply knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions, achieve goals, show empathy, maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible decisions. Advancements in SEL research and practices have looked to expand the definition of SEL to include transformative frameworks for supporting students in school in ways that address economic, racial, and gender-based issues in schools.

This year, the UC Berkeley School Psychology conference will be exploring transformative SEL practices in schools. Our goal is to engage both researchers and practitioners with the topic of using SEL practices to address inequitable structures and promote social justice-oriented perspective of SEL in schools. Not only are we focused on advancing research on SEL practices in education, we are also concerned with connecting evidence-based transformative SEL practices to what is already done in schools today. It is our hope that this conference informs our audience about the research and practice necessary to more effectively meet the complex needs of students today.

Our conference objectives are to:

  • Engage attendees in the cutting-edge research on transformative SEL
  • Provide practical knowledge on transformative SEL in schools
  • Connect researchers and practitioners to emphasize the importance of the research-practice partnership

We hope that this conference sparks a movement for the use of transformative SEL in schools by teachers, school psychologists, principals, researchers, and other people interested in improving the outcomes of our students.
