Healthcare disparities play an important role in outcomes in patients with cardiac disease and there are gaps in practitioner knowledge in these disparities. In addition, there continue to be advances in treatment of cardiac diseases such as heart failure with preserved ejection fraction and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. There are also gaps in understanding of management of common conditions such as anticoagulation for atrial fibrillation.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Review strategies for sudden death prevention in patients with cardiac disease.

  2. Discuss first line agents for treatment of heart failure with reduced ejection fraction, timing of starting medications and indications for starting medications.

  3. Identify novel treatment options for treatment of valvular heart disease..

  4. Describe how racial disparities impact outcomes in Black patients with cardiac disease.

  5. Discuss novel treatments for lipid lowering.

  6. Describe the appropriate use of antiplatelet therapy in primary and secondary prevention of coronary disease.
