Many organizations have adopted the project-based approach to completing work. So, it is no wonder that the concept of the program management office (PMO), has gained popularity.  The concept is not new, but recent incarnations of the PMO have proven effective in marshalling resources and focusing communications across the organization. We will also discuss the nuances involved from tactical to strategic PMOs, and how a global PMO can add significant value to your projects and your entire organization. Deploying your methodology is not a trivial affair. If you are serious about your organization adopting the new methodology, you must structure and implement deployment projects by taking a long-term, holistic view.

Megatrends: Shifting Global Dynamics

Speaker(s) Region(s): Europe and Sub-Saharan Africa

How do young people embrace project management to become leaders? How do you transition from a corporate to a startup project environment or vice versa? How do you select the mindset you belong to? We live in a highly dynamic environment where technology accelerates the pace of interactions of knowledge and where young people fluctuate between complex corporate environments and lean startups. The “new normal” demands talent to handle the ambiguities.

This session will outline the tradeoffs between a corporate and a startup project environment by giving insights from a complex supply chain design - redesign a corporate project versus a logistics project in an early stage B2B2C startup. We will compare these two relative mindsets - the corporate, which is related to fixed culture and the startup, which relates to a growing culture that suggests that every failure is a chance to learn. Growth experimentation and resistance to failure are the key outcomes to assist project managers in leading with agility in these challenging times by being customer-driven and focused on the market problem and addressing business acumen, not just being scope-driven. The use of proof of concept via business models, and not business plans, will transform project managers to project leaders to communicate deliverables to the stakeholders in the right manner. And we all need to support young leaders to address disruptions via the route of project innovation.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the conclusion of this session, attendees will be able to:

  • Differentiate between a corporate and a startup project environment by examining the insights from two supply chain and logistics projects; and
  • Compare the logic of the business models vs. business plans and discuss the concepts of intrapreneurship in organizations.

What good is a well-designed infrastructure, delivered on time and on budget if the end-user is not prepared to operate it?

One of the most widely neglected aspects of project management in the industrial field is operational readiness. It is often the differentiator in how the project will be perceived by those who will operate and maintain the product for years to come. Most importantly, operational readiness is a key success factor in delivering highly operable infrastructures, compressing the learning curve, and significantly reducing financial, legal, health, safety and environmental risks.

In this session, we will explain how we have used a systematic approach to plan, define and execute operational readiness for a new water treatment plant in the industrial sector. There are many examples of project failures resulting from treating operational preparation as a necessary but non-urgent task amid project management’s fast-moving, high-priority tasks. This project was approached differently by the project management office, with a resolve to mobilize the necessary resources to manage operational readiness in a systematic manner, as a project of itself. As the first project to benefit from this new approach, it acts as a pilot and a baseline on which to continuously improve, and results and lessons learned will be shared.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the conclusion of this session, attendees will be able to:

  • Explain what operational readiness is and list important elements that need to be included; and
  • Apply a high-level model for systematic operational preparation in construction projects.

This session will examine the lessons learned by a development management team which used program management to resolve the problems of a community with widespread unemployment, inadequate food supply, inexistent training for unemployed youths, poor infrastructure, etc. The water supply network was in a poor and dangerous condition. The supply scheme installed by a government organization more than 11 years earlier had failed. No comprehensive maintenance was carried out on the three artesian wells and the water network since it was commissioned. There was a serious backflow in the overflow piping which caused flooding in the well head area, adjoining roads and houses. Grid electricity supply was drastically inadequate, only being available for about four hours a week.

In June 2020, 17 international professionals were appointed to a development management team responsible for creating opportunities to enhance the general wellbeing of the people. The team adopted program management and defined each major problem as a project assigned to a specific committee. We will review the various projects and their impact on this community.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the conclusion of this session, attendees will be able to:

  • Describe how to lead a team of volunteers to solve major community problems in a work environment with no formal organizational hierarchy; and
  • Discuss the impact of no funding sources on projects and how to establish financial discipline.

Taking over a project with pre-established expectations and relationships beyond your control can create a stressful environment for you and your team. The odds of delivering a successful result often feel stacked against you, even with a well-curated project plan. Through personal experiences as an architect, the presenter has found that taking advantage of the transitional phase when you take over as the new project manager can help chart the optimum course for the project, regardless of the state in which it was received.
