10 Things to Know About the St. Louis Aquarium

1. Through the Aquarium's seven galleries, you will be able to explore the hidden treasures of the Missouri and Mississippi waterways, appreciate the "monsters" of our global rivers and delight in the stealth and grace of our oceans' greatest predators.

2. Whether you’re getting your hands tickled by doctor fish, being stared at by a giant arowana, meeting a magnificent redtail catfish, popping into the world of piranhas or exploring the unique geography on the interactive globe, you’ll be introduced to some of world’s most unique animals and the important rivers in which they live in the Global Rivers gallery.

3. Splash in the tidal pools of Ocean Shore while meeting some interesting and often misunderstood animals that live within the shallows.

4. Soak up the breathtaking experience of sharks and rays gracefully gliding amongst the thousands of schooling pilchards in a 250,000-gallon underwater paradise.

5. From coral and jellyfish, to an octopus and sea dragons, discover what these fascinating animals have in common in The Deep gallery.

6. There are more than 13,000 animals at the St. Louis Aquarium.

7. The St. Louis Union Station opened in 1894 as a fully operational train station. By the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair, Union Station would be one of the busiest and largest passenger rail terminals in the world. On an average day around 100,000 passengers moved through the rail station. The Aquarium embraces this unique history of the amazing St. Louis Union Station building by incorporating it throughout.

8. The trainshed above visitors on the second level of the Aquarium was built using Pegram trusses, which are frequently seen in bridge construction. This truss style was patented by engineer Georg H. Pegram, a graduate of St. Louis' Washington University.

9. The St. Louis Aquarium received the 2021 THEA (Themed Entertainment Association) award for outstanding achievement, entrance experience. An LED curved ceiling and integrated circular clock tank immediately submerges guests in a fantastic display of art, imagery, color, motion and music, while hundreds of colorful discuss fish swim among the gears of the working clock.

10. Guests will depart Union Station, fly around the Gateway Arch, plunge into the Mississippi River and visit the ocean through the Virtual Train experience.
