Workshop on Fostering a Circular Economy of Manufacturing Materials

Date: April 20, 2022 - April 21, 2022

Event Location:  Virtual

Organized by: ASTM Committee E60 on Sustainability

About the Event

The Workshop on Fostering a Circular Economy of Manufacturing Materials will be held Wednesday and Thrusday, April 20, 2022 and April 21, 2022. The workshop is organized by ASTM Committee E60 on Sustainability and will be held virtually.

Objective and Scope

This workshop will provide a forum to identify standards opportunities to foster a circular economy in discarded materials from manufacturing operations (as opposed to consumer waste generation or decommissioning of facilities.

Industry leaders are increasingly turning to the circular economy to address a global need for reducing waste and reusing materials. Stakeholder pressure is mounting to establish better practices for more sustainable systems. Join your industry colleagues for an informative workshop to connect and accelerate standards development related to the circular economy of discarded manufacturing materials.

The objective of the workshop is to develop a roadmap for ASTM technical standards to support the formation and engagement of manufacturers in a circular economy. Particular focus will be given to standards to support manufacturers in bringing their discarded materials into a mature materials marketplace as well as standards to measure and improve processing efficiencies resulting in reductions in discarded materials. The resulting roadmap will identify priorities for near-term standardization efforts. The roadmap will identify the necessary definitions for information flows supporting a sophisticate ecosystem for traceability and reuse of the materials. The effort will build on existing standards from ASTM E60, ISO 323 for which E60 is the US TAG, and other relevant efforts.

Topics include:

  • Vision for a circular economy focusing on discard materials from manufacturing production.
  • Review of current manufacturing measurement practices supporting circularity. We propose to conduct a survey prior to the event to gather data on current practices and present results of the survey as part of the workshop opening.
  • Review of existing and on-going supporting standards activities.
  • Success stories from industry participants on injecting circularity into manufacturing operations.
  • Facilitated brainstorming and discussion of standards needs and gaps.

Please take a few minutes to complete a survey about your organization, it's activities and practices towards reducing, reusing and recycling, and it's sustainability practices.  Taking this survey will help the organizers to tailor the workshop for the audience.  We thank you in advance for your input.

Abstract Submission

Please submit your 300-word abstract pertaining to the above topics to Workshop Co-Chairs KC Morris at katherine.morris@nist.gov and Amy Costello at aacostello@armstrongflooring.com no later than January 31, 2022.

Publication Information

Symposium authors are required to submit their papers for ASTM publication in an STP, an online and printed, peer-reviewed publication for the international scientific and engineering community. After the final selection of abstracts has been approved, the ASTM Editorial Office will send authors’ instructions via email only. Manuscripts to be peer reviewed for the STP are due online no later than DATE at the ASTM Editorial Office. The corresponding author (the author who is the main contact with ASTM Headquarters) will receive a copy of his/her paper in portable document format (PDF). All published authors will have the opportunity to purchase reprints of their papers at a nominal cost. Only those papers submitted by the manuscript due date will be included in the STP.

Please note that all submitted papers are subject to peer review by two independent reviewers. The STP will be submitted to the Library of Congress with an ISBN number and will be reviewed for inclusion in the Web of Science Conference Proceedings Citation Index (CPCI) and Google Scholar.
