About the Event
The 20th International Symposium on Zirconium in the Nuclear Industry will be held June 20, 2022 through June 23, 2022. The symposium is organized by ASTM Committee B10 on Reactive and Refractory Metals and Alloys, and will be held at the Fairmont Chateau Laurier, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
Objective and Scope
The purpose of the symposium is to provide a forum for exchanging new information on the fabrication, testing, development, and characterization of both traditional and new zirconium-based materials used in the nuclear industry, including materials performance during normal, transient, and accident conditions as well as materials behavior during intermediate and long-term storage conditions. Of particular interest are studies that focus on identifying and understanding the mechanisms and behaviors of zirconium-based materials.
Appropriate topics for papers include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Basic Metallurgy and Processing
- Fabrication and Alloy Development
- Mechanical Behavior
- Corrosion and Hydriding
- In-Reactor Performance
- Irradiation Effects
- High-Temperature and Transient Phenomena
- Mechanistic Modeling of Processing or Performance
- Intermediate and Long-Term Storage Performance
- Coatings for Accident Tolerant Fuel
The language of the symposium will be English.
Both oral and poster presentations are planned. The John Schemel Award for the best paper of the symposium will be selected from the submitted papers. The best poster will also be recognized at the symposium.
Canadian Nuclear Laboratories, Chalk River Site Tour
The Chalk River Laboratories serve as Canada’s national nuclear laboratories. The visit to the site will include tours of our facilities dedicated to materials science, fuel development and reactor fleet support. The specific agenda is still in development.
The tour will be:
• Friday June 24, 2022
• Ottawa Departure: ~7:30 AM
• Ottawa Return Arrival: ~5:30 PM
• Lunch is provided
• Bus transportation is provided

Registration
Registration is now open and will close on June 21, 2022. The fees to attend this symposium are listed below and include:
- a copy of the Selected Techincal Papers (STP) upon its publication after the symposium
- the buffet lunches on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday
- the Kroll Award Lunch on Wednesday
- the poster session on Wednesday
A discounted symposium registration fee is being offered for those who stay at the symposium hotel. All Attendees – All attendees must regsiter to attend this symposium and check in at the ASTM Registration Area to obtain their name badge before entering the event room.
Virtual Attendance – This event will be offering a virtual attendance option. This will be for live streaming only, and the cost is the same for ASTM Members, non-members, presenters and session chairs. There will not be any recordings of this event. Those choosing to attend virtually will receive the link to join the symposium approximately one week prior to the start of the event.
Students – Students may apply for the in-person attendance reduced registration fee provided they are a full-time student, are not employed full time, will not have thier registration fee or travel expenses paid by their university or other organization, and can provide a valid university email address for registration. Students must check in at the ASTM Registration Area on site, where they may be asked to show their valid student ID to pick up their name badge before entering the event room. THE REDUCED FEE DOES NOT INCLUDE A COPY OF THE STP.

ASTM has contracted a block of rooms at Fairmont Château Laurier. The special room rates for this event are listed below in CAD per night and do not include taxes and fees. The rate is only available for the date range of 15th - 27th June 2022. If you will need a sleeping room outside of these dates, you will need to make separate reservations.
