20th International Symposium on Zirconium in the Nuclear Industry

Date: June 20, 2022 - June 23, 2022

Event Location:  Fairmont Chateau Laurier, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

Organized by: ASTM Committee B10 on Reactive and Refractory Metals and Alloys

About the Event

The 20th International Symposium on Zirconium in the Nuclear Industry will be held June 20, 2022 through June 23, 2022. The symposium is organized by ASTM Committee B10 on Reactive and Refractory Metals and Alloys, and will be held at the Fairmont Chateau Laurier, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

Objective and Scope

The purpose of the symposium is to provide a forum for exchanging new information on the fabrication, testing, development, and characterization of both traditional and new zirconium-based materials used in the nuclear industry, including materials performance during normal, transient, and accident conditions as well as materials behavior during intermediate and long-term storage conditions. Of particular interest are studies that focus on identifying and understanding the mechanisms and behaviors of zirconium-based materials.

Appropriate topics for papers include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Basic Metallurgy and Processing
  • Fabrication and Alloy Development
  • Mechanical Behavior
  • Corrosion and Hydriding
  • In-Reactor Performance
  • Irradiation Effects
  • High-Temperature and Transient Phenomena
  • Mechanistic Modeling of Processing or Performance
  • Intermediate and Long-Term Storage Performance
  • Coatings for Accident Tolerant Fuel

The language of the symposium will be English.

Both oral and poster presentations are planned. The John Schemel Award for the best paper of the symposium will be selected from the submitted papers. The best poster will also be recognized at the symposium.

Canadian Nuclear Laboratories, Chalk River Site Tour
The Chalk River Laboratories serve as Canada’s national nuclear laboratories.  The visit to the site will include tours of our facilities dedicated to materials science, fuel development and reactor fleet support.  The specific agenda is still in development.

The tour will be:

Abstract Submission

To participate in the symposium, authors must submit a 250 to 300-word preliminary abstract using the online Abstract Submission Portal no later than DATE. To ensure your abstract was received into the ASTM database, please email symposia@astm.org and let us know that you have submitted an abstract.

The abstract must include a clear definition of the objective and approach of the work discussed, pointing out material that is new, and present sufficient details regarding results. The presentation and manuscript must not be of a commercial nature nor can it have been previously published. Because a limited number of abstracts will be accepted, be sure that the abstract is complete to allow for careful assessment of the paper's suitability for this symposium. The symposium chair(s) will notify you via email and postal mail by DATE of your paper’s acceptability for presentation at the symposium. If the preliminary abstract is accepted, the author will be requested to submit a final abstract a few months before the symposium. The final abstracts will be distributed in a program booklet at the symposium.

Publication Information

Symposium presenters are required to submit their papers to the Selected Technical Paper (STP), an online and printed, peer-reviewed publication for the international scientific and engineering community.  The ASTM Editorial Office has sent authors’ instructions via email to all accepted authors. Manuscripts to be peer reviewed for the STP are due online no later than February 5, 2022 at the ASTM Editorial Office. Please note that manuscripts will have a 10,000-word limit and the limit includes tables and figures which, if normal size, are equal to about 250 words each. The corresponding author (the author who is the main contact with ASTM Headquarters) will receive a copy of the paper in portable document format (PDF). All published authors will have the opportunity to purchase reprints of their papers at a nominal cost.

Technical Program

A technical program (presentation times, paper titles, and presenters’ names) will be posted on this site in early 2022.

Registration

Registration will open in March 2022.  More deatils will be posted at a later date.
