The Symposium on Microplastics Analytical and Reference Standards -- Opportunities to Advance Microplastic Science will be held Thursday, June 30, 2022. Sponsored by ASTM Committees D19 on Water and D20 on Plastics, the symposium will be held at the Hyatt Regency Seattle in Seattle, WA, in conjunction with the June 2022 standards development meetings of the committee. The language of the symposium will be English.
Objective and Scope
The primary goal of this symposium is to serve as a mechanism to raise awareness of the various microplastics sampling, preparation, and analysis activities that are occurring in the US and across the globe. Many organizations—academic, commercial, and non-profit included—have started work on microplastics sampling and analytical methods and the time is ripe to engage one another and confer on best practices, challenges, and future steps. It is our hope that this symposium will catalyze creation and adoption of new methods for microplastic analysis that will enable researchers to produce the highest caliber science in this burgeoning discipline.
Appropriate topics may include (but are not limited to):
- Sampling techniques – ocean collection, water column sampling, filtration and capture methods.
- Sample processing – biological specimen preparation, natural material digestion protocols, density separation.
- Analytical analysis – Spectroscopy, including IR, Raman, LDIR; Pyrolysis / gas chromatography / mass spectrometry; hyperspectral imaging.
- Reference material development – cryo, jet, and mechanical milling techniques; direct synthesis; ablative techniques such as ultrasound and high-intensity light.
To participate in the symposium, authors must submit a 250 to 300-word preliminary abstract using the online Abstract Submission Portal no later than DATE. To ensure your abstract was received into the ASTM database, please email email@example.com and let us know that you have submitted an abstract.
The abstract must include a clear definition of the objective and approach of the work discussed, pointing out material that is new, and present sufficient details regarding results. The presentation and manuscript must not be of a commercial nature nor can it have been previously published. Because a limited number of abstracts will be accepted, be sure that the abstract is complete to allow for careful assessment of the paper's suitability for this symposium. The symposium chair(s) will notify you via email and postal mail by DATE of your paper’s acceptability for presentation at the symposium. If the preliminary abstract is accepted, the author will be requested to submit a final abstract a few months before the symposium. The final abstracts will be distributed in a program booklet at the symposium.
Symposium authors are required to submit their papers to the Selected Technical Papers (STP), an online and printed, peer-reviewed publication for the international scientific and engineering community. After the final selection of abstracts has been approved, the ASTM Editorial Office will send authors’ instructions via email. Manuscripts to be peer reviewed for the STP are due online no later than April 15, 2022 at the ASTM Editorial Office. The corresponding author (the author who is the main contact with ASTM Headquarters) will receive a copy of his/her paper in portable document format (PDF). All published authors will have the opportunity to purchase reprints of their papers at a nominal cost. Only those papers submitted by the manuscript due date will be included in the STP.
Please note that all submitted papers are subject to peer review by two independent reviewers. The STP will be submitted to the Library of Congress with an ISBN number and will be reviewed for inclusion in the Web of Science Conference Proceedings Citation Index (CPCI) and Google Scholar.

Presenters - Symposium presenters do not need to register. Presenters will automatically be registered for this event.

Continuing Education Units
Symposium attendees interested in receiving 0.7 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) must complete the CEU application form in the back of the program booklet and submit it to ASTM Symposia Operations at firstname.lastname@example.org. You must be registered and have attended the entire event in order to receive the CEU’s. A certificate will be sent to the attendee approximately 2 to 4 weeks after the symposium concludes.

CANCELLATION/CHANGE POLICY: At the Hyatt Regency Seattle, notice of cancelation must be received 2 days prior to day of arrival in order to avoid a charge. Failure to do so will incur a penalty equal to the cost of one night's room and tax.
