About the Event

The Symposium on Reactivity Tests for Cement-based Materials – From Lab Testing to Standards and Specifications will be held Sunday, June 12, 2022. Sponsored by ASTM Committee C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates, the symposium will be held at the Hyatt Regency Seattle in Seattle, WA in conjunction with the June 2022 standards development meetings of the committee.

 

Objective and Scope

It is critical to differentiate supplementary cementitious materials and inert materials for use in concrete. Significant progress on reactivity/screening testing has been made in the last five years and numerous tests have been developed. However, standardization and use of these tests in specifications has lagged behind. It is hoped that this event will convene topical experts with presentations and discussions aiding in moving these tests forward from the lab to standards and specifications.

Topics for this symposium include, but are not limited to:

  • Reactivity testing for supplementary cementitious materials – recent advances
  • Determining links between reactivity testing outputs and concrete properties
  • Impediments to adaption of reactivity tests in standards and specifications
  • Strength activity test: How to improve a flawed test
  • Reactivity test interpretation using modeling approaches
  • Examples and case studies of application of reactivity testing approaches in large scale applications

The language of the symposium will be English.

 

Abstract Submission

To participate in the symposium, authors must submit a 250 to 300-word preliminary abstract using the online Abstract Submission Portal no later than DATE. To ensure your abstract was received into the ASTM database, please email symposia@astm.org and let us know that you have submitted an abstract.

The abstract must include a clear definition of the objective and approach of the work discussed, pointing out material that is new, and present sufficient details regarding results. The presentation and manuscript must not be of a commercial nature nor can it have been previously published. Because a limited number of abstracts will be accepted, be sure that the abstract is complete to allow for careful assessment of the paper's suitability for this symposium. The symposium chair(s) will notify you via email and postal mail by DATE of your paper’s acceptability for presentation at the symposium. If the preliminary abstract is accepted, the author will be requested to submit a final abstract a few months before the symposium. The final abstracts will be distributed in a program booklet at the symposium.

 

Publication Information

Symposium authors are required to submit their papers for ASTM publication in an STP, an online and printed, peer-reviewed publication for the international scientific and engineering community. After the final selection of abstracts has been approved, the ASTM Editorial Office will send authors’ instructions via email only. Manuscripts to be peer reviewed for the STP are due online no later than DATE at the ASTM Editorial Office. The corresponding author (the author who is the main contact with ASTM Headquarters) will receive a copy of his/her paper in portable document format (PDF). All published authors will have the opportunity to purchase reprints of their papers at a nominal cost. Only those papers submitted by the manuscript due date will be included in the STP.

Please note that all submitted papers are subject to peer review by two independent reviewers. The STP will be submitted to the Library of Congress with an ISBN number and will be reviewed for inclusion in the Web of Science Conference Proceedings Citation Index (CPCI) and Google Scholar.

All Attendees – All attendees must be registered to attend this event.  All attendees must check in at the ASTM registration area to pick up their name badge prior to entering the symposium.

Presenters – Presenters for this symposium do not need to register.  Presenters will automatically be registered for this event. 

Students – Students may qualify for a discounted registration fee, provided they are a full-time student, not employed full time, have a current university email address for registration, and can provide a valid student ID onsite, if asked to do so.  To register as a student, please email your request to symposia@astm.org.

Continuing Education Units

Symposium attendees interested in receiving 0.7 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) should complete a CEU application form at the adjournment of the symposium, and then submit it to the ASTM staff member on site. You must be registered and have attended the entire event to receive the CEUs. A certificate will be sent to the attendee approximately 4 to 6 weeks after the symposium.

CANCELLATION/CHANGE POLICY: At the Hyatt Regency Seattle, notice of cancelation must be received 2 days prior to day of arrival in order to avoid a charge. Failure to do so will incur a penalty equal to the cost of one night's room and tax.
