Technology Overview

This technology recognizes the mode of transport of an individual user, for example walking, car, bus, metro etc. Currently 12 different modalities are supported.

The technology comprises a set of algorithms and is offered to customers as an SDK, that the customer could embedded to their existing mobile application.

The SDK measures all mobility of the individual user and visualizes in various ways distances travelled, the travel times, the carbon footprint produced, and all transport modes used. Optionally, it also shows all the routes taken and the multi-modal travel chains.

We are looking for partners to adopt or invest in this technology to develop innovative services or products in their regions or countries.

Technology Features, Specifications and Advantages

The SDK includes a set of algorithms based on patented technology for transport mode discovery. Smartphone sensors (for example accelerometer and gyroscope) are used for the transport mode recognition on the phone itself.

Product owner also has a wide set of unique ground truth movement data and a data collection platform to develop new models with new modalities.

The technology utilizes edge technology, where most of the calculation and travel chain building is done locally on the user’s smartphone.

The core technology is originally developed at the University of Helsinki and patented worldwide.

Potential Applications

Application possibilities includes for example travel chain data with transport modes can be used for travel guides, MaaS applications, ticketless travelling, building personal movement carbon footprints and generally in all mobility behavior analysis purposes.

Technology can be provided via the platform or embedded into customer’s existing mobile applications.

Customer Benefit

The SDK offers a complete travel chain data of the individual user collected locally on the user’s smartphone with the recognized mode of transport. Mode of transport is essential to understand the nature of the user’s movement, which is missing on all existing location-based travel chain approaches.

Edge technology saves the amount of transferred data substantially and brings cost savings. Local data management also provides better ways for managing privacy issues, if required.
