A Message from the Symposium Chairperson and Planning Committee

Diabetes Care in the Post COVID World”

The 27th Annual SCPMG Diabetes Symposium is a regional symposium dedicated to the education of a multidisciplinary group that includes:   Primary Care Physicians, Endocrinologists, Ophthalmologists, Optometrists, Care Managers, Health Educators, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Nurses, pharmacists, administrators, and other allied health professionals who are dedicated to caring for patients with Diabetes.

The symposium will focus on the latest advances in research development and guidelines in diabetes care from external experts from around the country; and our internal experts will share advancements and best practices from within Kaiser Permanente.

Focused on addressing “Diabetes Care in the Post COVID World”, this year’s symposium will address the following topics:

  • Diabetes Care in 2021: Learnings from the Pandemic
  • Emerging Technology in Diabetes Management and Appropriate Prescription of Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM)
  • Patients’ perspective on Improving Diabetes Care Delivery
  • Diabetes and Exercise
  • Lifestyle Medicine & Diabetes
  • Update on Fatty liver as a Co-morbidity in Patients with Diabetes

The symposium is designed with the multidisciplinary team in mind and offers essential information for all clinicians who manage patients with diabetes.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES


At the end of this activity, learners will be able to:

  • Effectively treat and manage patients with DM during a pandemic by understanding the scientific basis of the condition
  • Prescribe CGM for the appropriate patient in the appropriate clinical setting for maximal benefit
  • Consider the patients’ perspective of their diabetes condition to help remove barriers to care delivery and patient engagement
  • Propose an exercise plan to patients to support their diabetes self-care
  • Recommend low calorie density foods to maximize nutrition and minimize calories to support diabetes control
  • Recognize fatty liver as a co-morbidity in patients with diabetes and prescribe lifestyle changes for patients to help retard progression to more serious liver disease

Physicians - The Southern California Permanente Medical Group is accredited by the California Medical Association (CMA) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

CREDIT DESIGNATION STATEMENT

The Southern California Permanente Medical Group designates this live educational activity for a maximum of 4.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™.  Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Nurses and Physician Assistants – Attendees may report up to 4.0 hours toward continuing education requirements for license renewal. ‘CME’ can be written in lieu of the provider number on all licensure renewal applications

Registered Dieticians: Kaiser Permanente Center for Healthy Living/Regional Health Education is a designated Continuing Education Provider and this activity has been approved for up to 4.0 contact hours.

RD’s and RN’s will be provided a certificate of attendance upon completion and submission of the Program Evaluation. It is the RD's responsibility to track and obtain the CEU credits through their personal Professional Development process.

CLS CEUs (Clinical Laboratory Scientists): For Laboratory Licenses CEU (MTA, MLT, CPT) only, please submit the separate evaluation (emailed to all participants) to Brandon Jeong (Brandon.H.Jeong@kp.org) for 4 CEU towards continuing education requirements for license renewal.

  • Primary: SCPMG providers: MD, DO, PA, RNP, RN, Podiatrists, Care Managers and DAs
  • Secondary: Community providers, same as in the primary target group
