LETTER FROM THE CHAIRS

Dear Psychiatry Colleagues:

On behalf of the American Academy of Clinical Psychiatrists, we are pleased to welcome you to our 2021 Psychiatry Update Virtual Event. From December 7-11, 2021, this innovative CME/CE experience will take you on a unique learning journey, which begins when you enter the Virtual Conference Center. In this space, livestreamed sessions will present the latest education in psychiatry and discuss practical application of emerging advances into clinical care.

A team of nationally renowned faculty experts will engage you and your fellow learners in the live virtual sessions. Take a seat in the Live Theater, where audience interaction will be enhanced by polling and ample time for live Q&A. Also included in the agenda will be daily oral presentations on selected abstracts and “Ask the Expert” sessions, an interactive case-based discussion based on attendee case submissions.

As in any live conference venue, you will find robust opportunities to interact with your colleagues beyond the educational sessions. There is much to explore! We encourage you to take full advantage of these conference features, in which you can:

  • Benefit from peer-to-peer learning in the Virtual Poster Hall
  • Network with other psychiatry specialists and practitioners in the Lounge
  • Enjoy friendly and fast-paced competition via MedChallenge
  • Visit booths in the Exhibit Hall (without lugging a tote bag)

As outlined in the program, each of the live sessions will be held on different days starting in the evenings Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and during the day on Saturday. All session times will be Eastern time. Should you be unable to attend, each recorded and accredited session will be available on the virtual platform for on-demand access until March 2022. After that, an enduring summary webcast and downloadable components will be available on https://medscape.org/psychiatry, in a resource center dedicated specifically to this conference. The educational content will be CME/CE-certified for an additional year.

Once again, welcome! We hope you will enjoy this one-of-a-kind virtual conference, benefit from the learning opportunities, and gather many clinical pearls to “bring home” to your practice!

Sincerely,

Perspectives in Mental Health: Ending Stigma, Creating Opportunity

December 7, 2021

7:00-7:30 PM

ABOUT GINGER ZEE

When it comes to nationally recognized broadcasters, the phrase “I’ve seen it all” has become a tired cliché. In the case of Ginger Zee however, the expression doesn’t even scratch the surface. Known to millions as the face of ABC News’ meteorology team, as well as for her third place finish on the 22nd season of Dancing with the Stars, Zee’s story goes far beyond the confines of television. With the release of her New York Times best-selling memoir Natural Disaster: I Cover Them, I am One, Zee brings readers along the immensely difficult path that took her from a depressed fledgling meteorologist to the first female chief network meteorologist at a network. After obtaining a B.S. in Meteorology from Valparaiso University, Zee worked her way up through various news outlets in the Midwest as a meteorologist and storm chaser. But as she puts it, by chasing these storms she was avoiding the real one brewing at home—a string of misguided relationships, including a horrifically abusive one that wouldn’t end until she was forced to call the police, and a deep soul search that lead her to check in to a mental health hospital ten days before starting her job at ABC. Zee was struggling with significant mental health issues that went undiagnosed until she entered that inpatient therapy and began—slowly but surely—to get her on track.

Despite all of this dysfunction, self-doubt, and turmoil, Zee has managed to build a remarkable career and family. Now, she is taking her message of resilience and self-care around the country. Zee will leave audiences feeling renewed, empowered, and intensely moved by her raw, poignant chronicle of life as a Natural Disaster.

All proceeds from the registration fees will be donated to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), a voluntary health organization that gives those affected by suicide a nationwide community empowered by research, education and advocacy to take action against this leading cause of death, and, the Anxiety and Depression Association of American (ADAA), the only multidisciplinary professional organization in mental health that engages the world’s leading experts who focus on anxiety, depression and co-occurring disorders.
