OVERVIEW

Learn about the key features of a highly effective observation process

This webinar will focus on how you can improve your current practice when observing teaching and assessment activities.

We will consider how the use of lesson observations by Ofsted to make judgements about ‘Curriculum Implementation’ and ‘Curriculum Impact’ has changed and how this might affect your own practice. You will be provided with a range of useful and insightful prompts for use when observing a group or one-to-one learning session.

Bearing in mind that observation activities should encompass the whole of the learner journey, we will consider what makes an outstanding progress review. We will finish by considering Richard's approach to observing lessons to encapsulate all the above points.

Objectives

At the end of this webinar, you will have learned about:

  • The ways in which the use of lesson observations by Ofsted inspectors to make judgements about teaching and learning have changed since the introduction of the Education Inspection Framework (EIF).
  • Why teaching in lessons is often judged too generously.
  • The traits of highly effective lesson observers.
  • What to look for in a great off-the-job training session.
  • Ofsted myths about teaching and learning.
  • What makes an outstanding progress review.
  • Richard’s approach to observing lessons.

Target Audience

Any providers of post-16 education and training, particularly those who think they are in scope to be inspected in the near future against the Education Inspection Framework (EIF) when Ofsted resumes inspections.

Senior leaders and managers with a particular responsibility for planning and implementing observation processes and procedures for teaching and assessment activities as part of their wider quality improvement strategy; Ofsted inspection nominees, sub-nominees and managers of curriculum areas. The webinar will use the ‘learner journey’ of an apprentice as its main focus, but most of the key points are equally applicable to other types of post-16 provision.
