STYRENE CIPP LESSONS LEARNED WEBINAR

Since the early 1970’s, the installation of Cured-in-Place Pipe (CIPP) liners to cost-effectively renovate deteriorate and leaking sanitary sewers and storm drains. Most of CIPP liners use Polyester and Vinyl Ester thermoset resins have a small amount of Styrene. This Styrene is a critical component for the CIPP liner as it acts as a catalyst to transform the resin from a liquid to a hard liner during the liner cure process by the addition of energy in the form of hot water, steam or UV light. During the liner cure, styrene can be released into the air, steam, hot water in concentration that people can smell. 

Recently, concerns have been raised with respect to the health and safety of workers, the public, and homeowners during CIPP lining.  

In 2019 AEGION and the University of Waterloo (UW) completed field study to investigate styrene concentrations and releases resulting from the installation of a CIPP liner in a sanitary main that has lateral connections with water air-filled P-traps. 

This study used three methods (Photo Ionization Detectors (PID’s), 3M organic Vapor Monitors, and the Waterloo Membrane Samplers) to determine styrene levels within and exiting the laterals before, during and after lining.

This Webinar consist of two presentations. The first will be by Dr. Mark Knight who will discuss the AEGION-UW styrene lateral study goals and objectives, key findings, and conclusions.

The second presentation by Dennis Pivin AEGION VP Environmental, Health, and Security will discuss AEGION’s proactive approach for workers and the public’s health and safety and newly published NASSCO new guidelines for worker health and safety during CIPP operations.

Dr. Mark Knight Ph.D., P.Eng. Consulting Engineer FIAM, M. ASCE

Mark is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Waterloo. He is also the Executive Director of the Centre for Advancement of Trenchless Technologies (CATT) also located at the University of Waterloo. Dr. Knight’s research over the past 20 plus years has been in the area of pipeline renovation using trenchless construction methods. He is also the led developer of the NASTT CIPP Good Practice Course which he has instructed for many years and NASTT CIPP Good Practice Manual. He has been retained as a technical expert in several liner failure investigations.

Mr. Pivin has over 25 years of professional experience in safety, health, and environmental program development, implementation, and management. He started his career in the chemical processing industry where he worked in chemical manufacturing of resins and additives. In this role, he implemented SHEQ for North American operations. He has spent the past 15 years working for Aegion LLC in the construction industry focusing on worldwide infrastructure rehabilitation. In this role, he has implemented leading indicator safety programs like Safety Culture Day and Safety Task Assignments in HSE management systems that have resulted in reductions in insurance costs, reduced worker compensation claims, and loss prevention.

Mr. Pivin earned a BS in Biology/Chemistry from MacMurray College. He is a Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Health and Safety Technician (CHST) as well as a Certified Environmental, Safety and Health Trainer (CET) with the Board of Certified Safety Professionals. He is a Licensed Safety Professional with the National Association of Safety Professionals and holds advanced ASSE certificates in Global Safety Management and Risk Assessment. He currently serves on the advisory panel for SIRC (Styrene Information & Research Center), is a member of the Safety Construction Committee for NASSCO, is an SGE (Special Government Employee) for the OSHA VPP Program, serves on the National Safety Counsel’s construction advisory panel, and has been a co-presenter with Waterloo University on Styrene exposures in CIPP.
