The San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) and UC San Diego IEEE Supercomputing Club are assembling a team to compete in the Student Cluster Competition (SCC), held at the annual Supercomputing Conference SC25 in St. Louis, MO, November 16 – 21. The SCC was developed in 2007 to immerse undergraduate and high school students in high-performance computing. The SCC teams consist of a mentor plus six students who will design and build a small cluster with support from mentors and hardware and software vendor partners. They will learn designated scientific applications and apply optimization techniques for their chosen architectures. SCC teams compete against teams from around the world in a non-stop 48-hour challenge to complete a real-world scientific workload while keeping the cluster running and demonstrating their HPC skills and knowledge to the judges.
UC San Diego and SDSC mentors will work with an extended team of students throughout the summer and fall to build and administer a “bare-metal” HPC cluster at SDSC and learn to install and run HPC applications.
If you are selected as a team member for SCC25, you will be expected to participate in regular meetings and training in preparation for the competition. Team members will travel to St. Louis, MO, from Friday, November 14 to Friday, November 21, 2025. The cluster will be shipped to SC25, and the team will then set it up for the competition. The competition will run from November 17 - 19 for 48 hours. All team members are expected to participate fully during the competition. SDSC, sponsors, and the SCC25 committee will pay for all related travel and expenses. If you are chosen to attend as a team member, we will help you work with professors to arrange missed classes.
