Dr Mark Urken received his medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine after graduating summa cum laude from Williams College. 
Trained in otolaryngology head & neck surgery and fellowship trained in microsurgery, Dr Urken was promoted to the rank of Professor in 1994 and served as Chairman of the Dept of Otolaryngology at Mt Sinai from 1995-1004. He is currently Professor of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery in the Icahn School of Medicine at Mt Sinai. 
He has published over 240 articles, 25 chapters on topics in head and neck as well as thyroid and parathyroid surgery, and 3 textbooks on head and neck reconstruction. Dr Urken is the founder and medical director of the Thanc foundation. He has developed the Thyroid Cancer Care Collaborative, which is a relational database and disease management tool with over 2000 patients entered and endorsed by AACE and the ATA
