Awel Uwihanganye is the Lead on Africa Initiative at Concordia University. Over the last ten years, he accumulated extensive experience working in public and private sector spaces, and in multi-cultural social entrepreneurship settings. Before joining Concordia, Awel served as the senior director at the LéO Africa Institute, which he founded in 2012. He was also employed at the Uganda National Chamber of Commerce and Industry as chief executive officer, and at the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung in Uganda and South Sudan as country program coordinator. He gained executive board experience working with the Capital Markets Authority, and the National Planning Authority in Uganda, where he served as a board member for both institutions for three years. Awel is passionate about innovation, social entrepreneurship, youth leadership and championing Africa’s growth. He founded and led several positive change projects over the years, including the Young Achievers Awards and CEED Concordia, the latter of which recently celebrated a 10-year anniversary. He represented students of the Arts and Science in the University Senate in 2005, was named as Concordia University’s Young Alumnus of the year in 2015, and was recognized for his civic commitment by Montreal’s Forces Avenir in 2006 and with the Colors of Concordia in 2005. Awel is a fellow of the African leadership Initiative East Africa, and a member of the Aspen Institute’s Global Leadership Network.
