Claire O’Malley completed a BA in Psychology & Philosophy from the University of Leeds in 1980. She was then awarded a scholarship from the Economic & Social Research Council, UK, to study for a PhD in computer-assisted learning in the School of Education, University of Leeds. During that time she also obtained an exchange scholarship to study at the University of California San Diego, USA (1982). She was subsequently employed as a research associate at UCSD for the remainder of her PhD studies, working in the Human-Computer Interaction group at the Department of Cognitive Science. She returned to the UK in 1985, was awarded a PhD by the University of Leeds, and a two-year postdoctoral fellowship by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council to carry out research at the School of Cognitive and Computing Sciences at the University of Sussex, on artificial intelligence and knowledge based systems. Following this, she was awarded a further two-year postdoctoral fellowship at the Institute of Educational Technology, The Open University, UK (1987), to carry out research on technology-enhanced learning. She then took up a post as lecturer in the School of Psychology, University of Nottingham, UK (1989). She was promoted to Senior Lecturer (1994), Reader (1999) and Professor of Learning Science (2004). In 2007 she was appointed as Dean of the Graduate School, University of Nottingham. During her tenure in this role she also oversaw the establishment of Graduate Schools at the University’s overseas campuses in Malaysia and China. She took up an appointment as Dean of the Faculty of Science at the Malaysia Campus in 2014, and most recently as Vice-Provost (Research & Knowledge Exchange) in August 2016.
