He went to school in Brussels, Belgium, between 1959 and 1968. In 1968 he started his studies in chemistry at the Technical University of Aachen, Germany. He got his Diploma in 1974. In the same year he started his career in Legal Medicine. He worked in the field of thantochemistry, post mortem toxicology and driving under the influence of drugs. In 1979 he got his Ph.D. and in 1992 his appointment as university professor at the Heinrich-Heine-University Dusseldorf. He was the president of the Society of Toxicological and Forensic Chemistry (GTFCh) between 1997 and 2007.
