I.d: Towards a new Magna Charta Universitatum for the future by Magna Charta Observatory (MCO)

Description
The Magna Charta Universitatum was first signed by 388 rectors in Bologna in September 1988. It contained fundamental principles and means of achieving them so that universities could play an effective role in society. Universities signing the MCU made a public commitment to valuing autonomy and academic freedom and operating in accordance with them. The document was drafted in 1988 and has served universities well for over 30 years - despite its references to a particular geographical region and period of time. A total of 889 universities have now signed the Magna Charta. Much has changed over that 30-year period, both in the contexts in which universities operate and in universities themselves. Universities now operate more internationally, have to respond more quickly in different modes with more technology and are challenged to be more sustainable and equitable as well as enabling the 4th Industrial revolution and serving the varying needs of a wider range of local, national and international stakeholders. However, their values; how they are developed, given effect and how they contribute to the maintenance and development of their reputation remain vital. These changes and challenges have caused the Magna Charta Observatory to conclude that the time is right to produce a new Magna Charta Universitatum. During this session the latest draft of MCU 2020 will be presented by a members of the MCO and the international group which is preparing it. The session will be interactive and participants will be invited to consider and comment on the new document. Their contributions will help to refine the draft and ensure that it can serve the transformation of universities for the future.
