The Research Technology Office (RTO) Ignite series is a dynamic collection of events designed to connect researchers and technology experts around shared interests, research goals, and emerging innovations. The series aims to spark collaboration and accelerate the adoption of cutting-edge research technologies across the ASU community.
RTO Ignite:Sustainable High Performance Computing (HPC)
This session will bring together ASU researchers interested in advancing various sustainable practices in high performance computing (HPC). We will highlight innovative workflows, tools, and strategies that reduce the environmental footprint of research computing while maintaining performance and scalability. The agenda will include lightning talks from several of the gathered participants followed by a round table discussion on future directions for this affinity group and opportunities for collaboration.
Hardware and Electronics
Low-power electronics and processors (ARM, RISC-V, GPUs optimized for efficiency)
Heterogeneous architectures (specialized accelerators to reduce energy per operation)
Algorithms and Software
Power-efficient algorithms (energy-aware algorithm design and optimization)
Energy-aware compilers and runtimes (compilation targeting low-energy execution)
Adaptive workload scheduling (load balancing to minimize energy waste)
Approximate computing (trading precision for efficiency where tolerable)
Resource optimization frameworks (software that tunes jobs for least energy per FLOP)
Fault-tolerant yet efficient systems (e.g.avoiding wasted cycles from re-computation)
Datacenters and Infrastructure
Sustainable power for datacenters (renewables, hybrid microgrids, battery integration)
Dynamic power management (power capping, DVFS – dynamic voltage/frequency scaling)
Carbon-aware scheduling (scheduling jobs based on grid carbon intensity)
Metrics and benchmarking (standardized energy-to-solution metrics for HPC systems)
