Join us as we welcome author and journalist Elise Hu to celebrate the release of her non-fiction debut, Flawless: Lessons in Looks and Culture from the K-Beauty Capital. Beauty culture is the cousin of diet culture, a matrix that sells us on the notion that we're not enough as we are and should buy products or services to fix ourselves. It's hustle culture reaching into our pores and muscles. It’s rooted in capitalism, colonialism, and patriarchy. But we also like and enjoy beautiful things, and find connection in touch — at a salon, or during a facial or massage. It is human to strive — and sometimes that means striving to look “better,” whatever that means to us. How do we love and care for our bodies ... without crossing into media-and-industry-fed mandates to fix them?
As an Asian-American woman with a background in geopolitical reporting, Elise highlights the voices and insights from the hundreds of Korean women she interviewed to change what empowerment looks and feels like. Lady La will talk with Elise about the book and how we can change appearance expectations and claim a more inclusive, intersectional, and community-centered ethic around “self-care.”
After the event Elise will be on hand for a book signing. Books can also be purchased at the event.
