Can Universities Bring Back our Downtowns?
The idyllic university image we’ve been sold is of a cluster of red brick buildings lined in ivy with a bustling quad near an open field that contains students reading on a picnic blanket as others toss a frisbee. It is of a defined campus– an ecosystem where you have everything you need to survive within walking distance. Rarely do you see non-technical, large research institutions anchoring in the middle of a city center like NYU or Rice. But that is quickly changing. Cal State LA just opened an outpost in Downtown Los Angeles. As did Arizona State University with the opening of the ASU California Center. As major corporations continue to operate in a hybrid fashion and you see fewer employees back in the office, can Universities be the economic engine that drives downtown city centers to succeed? Can their presence downtown create a better ecosystem that boosts creativity and innovation? Join us on April 28th to hear from higher education leaders on the future of our city centers.
