Target Audience: This course is designed for physicians, physical therapists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and other licensed healthcare professionals who have a foundational understanding of musculoskeletal anatomy and wish to expand their clinical proficiency in musculoskeletal and vascular ultrasound for diagnostic and interventional applications.
Course Overview: The UC San Diego Musculoskeletal and Vascular Ultrasound Training Course provides an integrated, evidence-based curriculum designed to enhance clinicians’ proficiency in point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) for the evaluation, diagnosis, and management of musculoskeletal and vascular conditions. This hands-on, in-person course combines foundational and advanced instruction to promote clinical competence in ultrasound imaging and ultrasound-guided procedures relevant to orthopedic, rehabilitation, sports medicine, and hematology practices.
Participants will receive structured training in ultrasound physics, equipment operation—including the use of emerging handheld devices—along with detailed instruction in sonoanatomy and sonopathology of the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, ankle, and spine. The course emphasizes the application of ultrasound for detecting and characterizing soft tissue injuries, arthritic and hemophilic joint pathology, and vascular abnormalities such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) using duplex imaging techniques.
Through small-group, faculty-supervised scanning sessions and case-based learning, participants will gain practical experience in dynamic image acquisition, interpretation, and ultrasound-guided joint injection and aspiration techniques. The curriculum also integrates the validated Joint Activity and Damage Exam (JADE) protocol to assess joint health and disease progression in persons with hemophilia.
