The NHERI Computational Modeling and Simulation Center (SimCenter) is offering its SimCenter Programming Bootcamp on June 16 - 20, 2025 and July 28 - August 1, 2025. The goal of the Bootcamp is to train natural hazards researchers in programming paradigms not covered in traditional civil engineering courses, but which are needed to advance simulation for natural hazards engineering. The weeklong (3 - 4 hour per day, plus homework and pre-class preparation) events are stimulating and robust introductions to programming and software development to enable natural hazards engineering research. Registration is available for one or both of the weeklong sessions.

 

The target audience is graduate students, postdocs, and new faculty who are interested in simulating the effects of natural hazards on building components, structures, and communities. During the two sessions, participants will be instructed by and interact extensively with the SimCenter’s lead development team. A sampling of course modules to be offered include:

The Bootcamp will employ an online format. Each session will include videos for self-study in preparation for live, on-line classes that include interactive demonstrations, discussion, hands-on exercises, and assignments. The self-study portion is open source and freely available on GitHub, while registration secures your opportunity to interact with SimCenter lead developers with in-depth instruction and feedback.

 

Class will be held each day beginning at 9am, but participants should expect to commit much more time each day to tackle assignments and prepare for the next day with the pre-recorded videos. Since the content builds on previously presented material throughout the week, it is critical to participate throughout the week. The final agenda and meeting logistics will be issued to registrants.
