The purpose of this professional learning series is to support educators in leveraging History-Social Science (HSS) and Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy (CSP) to improve student experiences and academic performance. Anchored in the California HSS Framework, the California Department of Education (CDE) Ethnic Studies Model Curriculum, and the Learning for Justice Critical Practices for Social Justice Education pillars, this series integrates equity-centered instructional strategies to enhance culturally sustaining teaching practices and create inclusive learning environments. Throughout the series, we will analyze and use data to guide discussions and collaborative planning. Key indicators of success will include attendance and chronic absentee rates, district Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) data/California Healthy Kids Survey data/Panorama/Other District Climate Survey, suspension rates, and benchmark English Language Arts (ELA) and CAASPP performance data.
This series will provide educators with the tools and collaborative opportunities necessary to foster culturally sustaining, equity-driven History-Social Science instruction in their schools and districts.
