Selection Process, Preparation, and Implementation
Starting in the 2025-2026 school year, Local Education Agencies (LEAs) will be required to annually assess Kindergarten through second-grade students for risk of reading difficulties. Students will be assessed in their primary language, provided that the screener is available in that language. The new legislation offers LEAs the opportunity to review, develop, and refine their assessment systems, ensuring the thoughtful integration of the new requirements.
By June 30, 2025, LEAs must adopt a reading difficulties risk screening tool(s) from the list of state-approved screeners.
The Santa Clara County Office of Education is hosting a live 3-Part Webinar Series to support LEAs in:
Understanding the requirements and recommendations of the new legislation
Developing a thorough selection process which includes reviewing current assessment practices and primary language data
Identifying the essential components of training and preparation
Crafting a comprehensive communication and implementation plan
Following the webinar, participants will have an opportunity to ask questions.
