New York Summer Public Trip Series
Event Description:
Each summer Lake Champlain Sea Grant and University of Vermont (UVM) Extension host a series of Summer on the Lake educational boat trips. The public is invited aboard the UVM research and education vessel, the R/V Marcelle Melosira, to build scientific, geologic, cultural, and historical knowledge about Lake Champlain and its watershed. Several public New York trips will be offered for August 2024 on the theme Lake Champlain Live (see details below).
Age Restriction:
Participants must be a minimum of 8 years old to attend.

On Lake Champlain aboard the R/V Marcelle Melosira
Meet at Plattsburgh City Marina, 2 Dock Street, Plattsburgh. Parking available on site.
Trip Options:
Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your selected time.
Trip 1: Tuesday, August 27th, 2024, from 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM
Trip 2: Tuesday, August 27th, 2024, from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM
Trip 3: Wednesday, August 28th, 2024, from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM
Trip Description:
Lake Champlain Live will provide participants with an opportunity to learn about and try their hands as limnologists (i.e., those who study inland waters). Following an interactive introduction to the geology and formation of the Lake Champlain basin and the lake, participants will learn about biological, chemical, and physical measurements limnologists make to improve our understanding of the lake, its watershed, and our impacts on them.
Participants will engage in such activities as:
Towing for plankton & identifying plankton
Assessing for invasive species
Using and interpreting a conductivity-temperature-depth meter
Monitoring water clarity
Price:
$30 per person
Financial Note: A limited number of scholarships are available for those with financial constraints. Please refer to contact below to inquire about this option, if interested.

Please be aware that access to the boat will require climbing a ladder up and down. Cancellation Policy:
Cancellations must be made more than 1 week before your scheduled trip departure to be eligible for a refund to seagrant@uvm.edu. However, if the boat is not able to sail due to weather conditions and the event is canceled, refunds will be issued, less a 4% transaction fee. The Staff and boat Captain will do their best to make the call within 12 hours of the trip.
