Distinguished Speakers
Denis Leclerc teaches cross-cultural communication and global negotiations at Thunderbird School of Global Management. His interests and research have focused on intercultural communication competence and global negotiation. He teaches in multiple programs such as on-campus MBA, Executive MBA, customized programs such as Thunderbird International Consortia, and multiple oil and gas executive programs. He also serves as the academic director for multiple custom programs such as Raytheon, Novartis and Medtronic, and open-enrollment programs such as Communicating and Negotiating with a Global Mindset and Leading Teams for Strategic Results. Before joining Thunderbird, Leclerc taught at Arizona State University and served for eight years as director of multiple international studies abroad programs there. He directed and served on numerous masters and doctoral degree committees in the U.S. and Europe. He was co-program evaluator for a National Science Foundation three-year grant examining the cultural adaptation of U.S. scientists working in scientific laboratories abroad. This research project was instrumental in guiding the foundation to redesign program components to include cross-cultural training for their international assignments.
Leclerc has been published in leading journals in his field including the International Journal of Intercultural Relations, and has been a contributor to Readers in Communication, authoring a chapter on the impact of culture on global negotiations.
He is also an active and highly sought-after consultant. As the principal of his own consulting company, he has conducted cross-cultural research for companies in North America and France. Additionally, he has provided support for international program evaluations and has planned, facilitated, and analyzed professional-development seminars for a wide range of executive programs throughout the U.S. and Europe. He is a keynote speaker and seminar leader for various companies such as American Express, U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and ExxonMobil on topics as varied as cultural misunderstanding, improving multi-cultural awareness, and cultural strategic negotiation preparation.
Les Schiefelbein is an internationally recognized Arbitrator and Mediator with over forty years corporate law and government law expertise in US and International business and technology matters.
Les is a founding member and Vice-Chair of the Board of Directors for the Silicon Valley Arbitration & Mediation Center. He was previously Vice President and Deputy General Counsel at Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company and a US Air Force Judge Advocate Reserve (Colonel), serving clients on US and international aerospace, national security, technology transactions and arbitration and mediation matters. Les has handled over 400 cases in the course of his career, and has gained particular expertise as a sole, chair or panel arbitrator in commercial and government disputes to include aerospace, aviation, satellites, cybersecurity, national security, information technology, trade secrets, intellectual property, software licensing, energy and construction.
He is a member of the American Arbitration Association (AAA) Commercial Panel, Large and Complex Cases; International Centre for Dispute Resolution (ICDR) International Panel, Aerospace, Aviation and National Security Specialty Panel; International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) International Court of Arbitration and US member of the ICC Commission on Arbitration and ADR; International Panel of Arbitrators, London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA). He is an accredited mediator with the Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDR) and AAA/ICDR; Panel of Arbitrators, Singapore International Arbitration Centre and the SIAC Users Council; CPR Panel of Distinguished Neutrals serving on its San Francisco ADR Panel, General Counsel Panel, Cross-Border Panel and Technology Panel; Panelist, Asian International Arbitration Centre; Panelist, Korean Commercial Arbitration Board International; Panelist, The Chinese Arbitration Association, Taiwan; Shenzhen Court of International Arbitration; Japan Commercial Arbitration Association and has acted in matters under UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules. Les is a member of the USA Subcommittee Member for the Equal Representation in Arbitration Pledge.
Harold Coleman, Jr. is an award-winning dispute resolution practitioner, educator, and peace-building champion. He is an attorney, arbitrator, mediator, conciliator, facilitator, teacher, trainer, speaker, writer and conflict coach.
Harold is senior vice president for mediation at the American Arbitration Association (AAA)… the global dispute resolution leader, and mediator/executive director for AAA Mediation.org…an AAA technology innovation that trains and develops mediators, assists them with promoting their practices, and connects them with a diverse community of ADR practitioners, users and thought leaders worldwide. He also trains new AAA arbitrators and aspiring/practicing mediators in basic/advanced arbitration case management techniques and basic/advanced mediation skills.
A former multi-disciplinary project manager and complex litigation attorney, Harold’s mediated and arbitrated multiplied hundreds of litigated and non-litigated disputes over a 30+ year legal and ADR career. His formal education encompasses studies in civil engineering, business, real estate and law, leading to the academic degrees of Bachelor of Science and Juris Doctor. He is a former member of the AAA’s international board of directors, a Fellow of the College of Commercial Arbitrators (CCA), and a director for the International Mediation Institute (IMI). He is program co-chair for the American Bar Association’s Advanced Mediation & Advocacy Skills Training Institute.
Harold is recipient of the State Bar of California’s Distinguished Service to the Legal Profession citation and twice recipient of the Wiley E. Manual Award for Pro Bono Legal Services to the Poor. He was nominated, vetted for, and profiled in the National Law Journal’s Legal Times as an ADR Champion for 2017. In 2018 he was conferred the American Bar Association Section of Dispute Resolution’s 2018 Chair’s Distinguished Service Award. In 2020 the National Bar Association (NBA) awarded Harold the Meritorious Service citation for his support of NBA ADR diversity initiatives and service to its membership through professional development training, mentorship and guidance during a long-standing, multi-decade partnership of AAA and NBA.
Harold also is recipient of the Southern California Mediation Association's (SCMA) 2020 Cloke-Millen Peacemaker of the Year Award, SCMA's highest honor bestowed on individuals who inspire the ADR community and public at large with their dedication to peacemaking.
Steve Andersen has over 20 years’ experience as an international dispute resolution professional. He is the point person to interface and collaborate with legal professionals, industry groups, advisory committees in the technology, energy, finance, aerospace, aviation, and construction industries in locations around the world. Steve dedicates a substantial amount of time organizing and facilitating international dispute resolution education including multiple events in the North America, Europe, Asia, and South America. Inaugural winner of the Outstanding Contribution to Technology Dispute Resolution Award by Silicon Valley Arbitration & Mediation Center. Steve oversaw and managed the 2021 ICDR Rule Amendments.
He is appointed by U.S. State Department to be member of the USMCA 31.22 (NAFTA 2022) Advisory Committee on Private Commercial Dispute Resolution and co-chairs its mediation subcommittee. Responsible for the launch of ICDR Canada services that include a full range of dispute resolution services, rules, arbitrators, mediators, training and more. Steve dedicates a substantial amount of time organizing and facilitating international dispute resolution education. Organized multiple prominent international dispute resolution events in the North America, Europe, Asia and South America.
Organized and lead training programs on negotiation, mediation and arbitration for corporate counsel groups. He also has significant experience presenting to large groups, training professionals, publishing articles, and building executive networks with multinational companies and top-tier law firms. Steve has organized and facilitated many mediation training programs. Steve has had a leadership role with many rule project initiatives including 2021 and 2014 ICDR rule changes, Final Offer Arbitration Rule offering, Canadian Arbitrator Appointing Authority Rules, ICDR Canada Arbitration and Mediation Rules, mediation, early neutral evaluation, fact-finding and mini-trial service offerings.
James J. Rim is currently the Vice President, General Counsel of Legal and HR at voestalpine High Performance Metals LLC for the North America region. Prior to such position, Mr. Rim served as the General Counsel of Mobis North America, LLC. Mr. Rim joined Delphi Automotive Systems LLC as an executive attorney, and as Associate General Counsel and Head of the Asia Pacific Legal Department at RealNetworks, Inc. Mr. Rim joined LG.Philips LCD and was based out of Europe for number of years and served in various roles at LG.Philips LCD including head of legal and head of business support team. Prior to joining LG.Philips, Mr. Rim practiced corporate and construction law at, Leff, Cohen & Winkler, Ltd. and Mondero, Rim, D’Souza & Gosrisirikul, Ltd. Mr. Rim received a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, a Juris Doctorate from Tulane School of Law, an LL.M. degree in construction law from the John Marshall Law School, and an EMBA from the Helsinki School of Economics. Mr. Rim is currently an adjunct lecturer at Ajou University College of Law and taught at the Graduate School of International Studies. Mr. Rim has also served as a lecturer at Seoul National University, College of Law and lecturer at Konkuk University School of Public Administration and Sogang University.
