Horror and the Formula of Violence with Gabino Iglesias
Horror and the Formula of Violence with Gabino Iglesias
Saturday October 23rd 10AM-12PM. Phoenix MST
In this workshop we will work on bringing together elements of horror, noir, and the supernatural while learning to use violence as a tool. We will explore the role of empathy through characterization, which means we'll discuss positionality, Otherness, physicality, and other core elements of great character development and how they fit into horror narratives. We will talk about the explosive, messy nature of violence and how to pace it to serve our narrative while also looking at some of the subgenres of horror and their relations/expectations in terms of violence. Finally, we will deconstruct the formula of violence to see how horror thrives when we rearrange it to explore new territory and shatter readers' expectations. Students will identify a type of violence they would like to explore and then develop the plot of narrative using those elements. Ultimately, the core purpose of the workshop is to make writers think about how the many types of violence out there can drive their horror and maximize the emotional impact of their stories.
